DJ Fidgit Bio

Where most djs and artists cite the music their parents bought them up on as influencing their art, Fidgit tells a very different story….

“My Dad was well into Cliff Richard and The Shadows so that kinda drove me to find what other musical forms there were out there. It helped me to keep an open mind whilst rooting through as much different music as I could get my hands on.”

Moving to London from South Africa as a little boy the rhythmical patterns that he had heard and felt in the African music stayed with him, he began drumming and playing percussion until due to a spinal disease was unable to continue, and felt the logical progression was into djing…” the art of DJing was just taking off. The DMC competitions has begun and people were beginning to realise just how much you could do with two turntables, a mixer and a mic.”

He started playing wherever he could- school discos and dodgy house parties- saving to buy vinyl and his first set of decks, which on managing to find a cheap deal on some ‘steaming hot’ Technics he did, age 15.

Twelve years on and he is still using the same decks, although the first mixer went within a month- crossfade demolition.

His first love is Hip-hop but, as one can see from his varied experience, his playing styles now range from hip-hop, nu-skool breaks, electro, house, funk and rare groove- “I just like good quality party music. Back in the day with Grand Wizard Theodore and Grand Master Flash it wasnt about attitude and the latest beats. It was strictly about the funk in all senses of the word- playing anything from disco, funk, ska, ragga, punk – anything that had that vibe. I love hip-hop and all its elements but one of its key components is the ‘borrowing’ of other musical forms-combining different phrases and vibes to construct something new and totally fresh. I just want to have a good time with it, and if that means dropping a Gwen Macrae tune just to rock it harder then so be it!”
