University of Natal Hip-Hop Association was formed by Koolvee in 2001, and officially recognised by SRC. Currently Koolvee is studying BA Music degree. UND-HHAS was formed to create a platform whereby Hip-hop Emcees and patrons could meet and discuss issues related to Hip-hop music. Some of our activities are workshops and performances, which cover Hip-hop history and news, rhyming, dancing, composition, writing lyrics, Deejing, and recording.

One may ask what is Deejing anyway.
I’ll start by saying it is not just chaining tracks together into one long continuous piece of music.
it’s all about how you mix your records, and the order in which you mix them can make or break an atmosphere. A DJ is a musician who is using music to make music. The turntables, mixer and records make up one of the most versatile and complex instruments imaginable.
Still, this does not do credit to the most important thing about Deejing. The ultimate goal for a Deejay is to create something magical with the audience, to make time stop, to create a natural high, or more down to earth, at least give the crowd a great time and rock da party.
Our network is expanded to radio stations, record companies, nightclubs, promoters, sponsors, record stores, musicians and deejays.
Some of our objectives are: –
Ø To develop an appreciation of the use of music in present-day commercial entertainment.
Ø To discover areas in music for personal achievement.
Ø To promote, encourage and support the preservation, understanding, appreciation and dissemination of Hip-hop music.
Ø To hold performances and workshops.
Ø Membership shall be open to all students who are registered to the University of Natal.
Our network is expanded to outside community, and we are working in collaboration with some Hip-hop groups around Durban. We are looking forward to attend African hip-hop indaba #3 workshop at Cape Town on the 17th – 21st July 2002. Black Noise group from Cape Town hosts this workshop.
