Pretoria has its Oppikoppi, Heidelburg has its Woodstock and Joburg has its Easter Rock Concert. So where does that leave Cape Town? What festivals do we have to celebrate all that is local and lekker? Well, this year Cape Town has the opportunity to showcase raw talent at its best. Fire on the Mountain is an initiative of the budding hip-hop fraternity blowing up on the Cape Flats. The mountains of the Franshoek Valley will set the scene as backdrop for the first ever event of its kind.

Fire on the Mountain is a ‘celebration of South Africa’s new up and coming street artists’ in an explosive hip-hop atmosphere. The festival will run for three days (27 – 29 September) at the Wemershoek camping grounds. Tickets for a day pass will cost you R6 or R16 for a weekend pass and campers will be allowed to pitch their tents.

But wait, there’s more! Performers and artists will be allowed to showcase their new work from the back streets and margins of society. The aim of the festival is to make people socially aware of the role art through music plays in society.

Artists that will be performing are Chronic Clan, Plain Madniz, Wildlife Society, HOR and Black Fist of Garvey amongst others.

The event will stage four sectors; live bands, poetry, MC’s and graffiti art.

The Bonfire/centre stage: live bands, musicians, mc’s, poetry and stand-up comedy. There will also be regular Open Mic sessions for anyone who thinks they got what it takes.

The Fire-Wall: street painters, potters and photographers will be allowed to display their work in this area.

On screen flickering flames: movie on the mountain. Friday and Saturday night will feature independent films.

The Freestyle Veld Fire: here freestylers battle it out with raw rap talent.

Fire on the Mountain not only forms a base for rookies to start out, but it also provides a platform for visual arts, street music, dance, theatre and film. It allows for artists to tell their stories while using experimental styles and techniques.

Festivals proceeds will be donated to the La Motte community to help get their empowerment plan off the ground.
