Tell us a bit about yourself, where you from and where you at.

I’m a “coloured boy” born in Pretoria raised in Jo’burg and now running tings in Gauteng!

How long have you been in the game?

Since ’93 so that’s like almost 10 years, damn!

What would best describe your style?

My style is a Joburger’s perception of hip-hop sound being a wide spectrum of musical styles intercepting, technically I’m fresh and subtle with mine, I won’t sound like an automated jukebox and never as hype as Ready D but you will notice me – I manipulate the music to keep the vibe in balance.

If people had to ask you what makes you different from the hundreds of other deejays what would you say?

Besides my personal taste in music which I’ve seen influence other people daily, it has to be my arrogance, in that I don’t spin to “please a crowd”.  My selections contain music that aren’t proven hits, I’ve got dozens of “exclusives”.   I break tracks with my audience, I try to keep a steady pace in my vibe making it almost impossible for people to walk-off the dancefloor or skip to the next track when they hear something they’re unfamiliar with.

Is the cassette still in demand or are you moving over to CD now?

I move more units on tape format cos its much cheaper and compatible to almost every sound system on the planet especially in Africa, I love tapes, I think we’ll be using them forever, in the year 2090 Africa will be selling more tapes than any other continent! CD’s work for the peeps who buy music regularly, for them its like a quality thing, anything less just doesn’t do it – I respect that!

Who influenced you? What made you get up one morning and decide I’m gonna get me some decks?

Actually it was more like this – I just loved the beats, the music, for most of my career I had only 1 belt drive turntable on a hi-fi, I just couldn’t save the doe to buy 1210’s its like when I started hanging out with blaze at his spot I realised just how important 12’s were, so I’ve had them for like 2 years now. DJ influences a guy named DJ Hugo from Eden Park the township I grew up in, this man is like the president, I liked the influence he had on the community including me and wanted to be like that, music is power!

Who (other than yourself) are the best deejays in your opinion?

I don’t’ believe that there can ever be the “best DJ” every DJ has a little something special that makes him/her the best at that. but the people I truly respect is DJ Qool Marv (NY), Absolut (NY), Shortee Blitz (London), Spinbad (Philly), Blaze (JHB), Hugo (JHB), Ready D (CPT)

Do you have a funny story you can share with the readers out there? Anything strange happen to you as a deejay?

One night at who zoo jhb, I was spinning the freshest cuts (old/newskool, jigged out flavas) the vibe was hot as ever! after about 40 minutes of playing, a coloured girl comes to me and says, hey dj please play some stuff for US, as in US you know US, and I’m like what the fuck? this shit I’m bumping right now is for everyone including you! how can there possibly be music made for coloured people? she then said that I was a sellout and wasn’t keeping true to myself and this is the strangest shit that I’ve ever come across in my entire career, music is universal, we go to clubs to get to know other people and other cultures, please leave the narrow shit at home! If I’d been more relaxed I’d probably have pulled out some shit that blew up only in the coloured townships like….damn nothing comes to mind! anyway that might come across as a lame story but for real that is about the weirdest shit that happened to me. Otherwise, its the usual u know what…

What DJ equipment will give you a hard on/nipple stand?

The Vestax 07PRO ISP Quadraphonic mixer, double pioneer CDJ’s 1000 CD turntables, PIONEER FX UNIT and a 5KW FM Radio Transmitter!

What’s better, the smell of vinyl or the smell of a homemade meal?

THAT’S A TRICKY ONE!

If there was a fire and you only had the chance to save 3 records, what would it be?

THE MOTHALOAD, SPEX – RHYMZ I WROTE, CASHLESS SOCIETY – BLAZE THA BREAKS

Where can we get your mixtapes?

djbionic@iafrica.com

I done some shit a while ago that was released commercially that might still be available at Cd warehouse, look and listen and probably musica, otherwise contact me and you can get a tape from R40 and CD’s from R80
