Avatar Records Going From Bounds to Leaps

24 February 2003 No Comment

Los Angeles based Avatar Records is going from strength to strength. What started out as a small time Black owned business has expanded and owns the rights to exclusive artists such as Tupac, Bell Biv Devoe, Brandy and many more. I recently had the opportunity to listen to their new releases thanks to heads of promotion Chris Roke. He hooked me up with some vinyl of hip hop heavy weights Black Moon, Ras Kass, Official Pham, Pharcyde and Mos Def who’s single “Working It Out” is going for the top 5 most chartered tracks on local charts.

For those not acquainted with Avatar it’s the same company that’s responsible for the T.V. series OZ distribution. Check the Oz soundtrack for the Avatar imprint on the cd sleeve. I have also been waiting for the release of the N.V.A album of Avatar “National Vinyl Association: Straight From The Crates Volume 1”. The release will feature such innovative beatsmiths like the Beatminerz, Dj Babu, Ayatollah, Joey Chavez and Dj Khalil. It is said the release will take the old school heads way back to the golden age of hip hop when mic and turntable skills was the paramount. After months of keeping hip hop heads anticpated the official release date has been confirmed for 25 of February 2003. South African heads can expect it to reach us much later.

N.V.A tracklisting:

1. Rakaa and Babu of Dilated People “Speakin’ The Truth
2. Mos Def “Workin It Out”
3. Blackmoon “The Way”
4. Saigon “Do You Know”
5. Ras Kass “Verbal Murder”
6. SlumVillage “Da Villa”
