GrandSlam Magazine Vol 1 Issue 1

13 April 2003 No Comment

Do you remember Big Daddy Magazine?  Well the creators of that classic have regrouped their efforts to bring an even better magazine aimed at hip hop purists.  This is a thick magazine, thicker than the Source by the way, full color and retails at around £3.95.  With this debut issue you also get a free cd.

Now the content in this magazine can prove to be invaluable for anybody wanting to know the details behind this industry.  There is a lot of rare information contained herein that will produce hard-ons.  For instance in this issue they ran a series of indepth articles about the cut-n-paste era of the early 80’s.  They interviewed Steinski, Coldcut and the Latin Rascals.  For days I was heavily involved reading these articles as I learned about the early remix pioneers.

I also learned more about the career of Mc Serch and this magazines interview styles provide extreme insight into the people we used to look up to in the early days of hip hop.  There is also a very interesting interview with the Roots and Bill Adler talking on Jam Master Jay.

They have a graf section as well where they display styles from all over the world.  Their reviews section is out of this world.  In addition to reviewing current hip hop releases they also review obscure records from back in the day that will make any beat digger foaming at the mouth.

What I liked was the Random Rap Files:  Uncovering Hip Hop’s Lost Classics section where they find a record that most of us have forgotten about.  For instance in this issue they take a look at Lord Shafiyq’s “My Mic Is On Fire” single, released 1987 on Nuwr Records.  They get all the details behind this release and it was such a pleasure reading this.

There is just too much information in this magazine to write about in this feature.  The magazine has kept me occupied for days and it’s also the kind that you can pick up in 3 months time and enjoy again.  If there is ever a magazine that you would like to subscribe to it has to be this one.
