On Saturday August 2nd, CD Wherehouse and 206 Productions invite you to a “Hip Hop Hooray” warm up session in-store. Blaq 3000 performs from 3pm to 4pm, opening for Ready D who conducts a scratch workshop with performances by Max Normal and Tumi and the Volume two on two with a four deck explosion thereafter. This showcase gig is a promotion for these artists who will be performing later at the BAT Centre for “Hip Hop Hooray”. Tickets are available at the BAT Centre.

Recently I hooked up with the Mad Krew who come from that North West city Seattle. They had produced a fat video called “Enter The Madness” which showcased inner city graffiti, bboying, deejaying and emceeing. Immediatley I was interested in what these cats were up to. They also released a few albums and even got their own TV show. Peep it!

We recently hooked up with Marchant, who if you can remember was a member of the Western Cape old skool hip hop group Jam B (together with FAT MC) and Dirty Thoughts (together with another old skool producer Caramel). We spoke to him about his extremely successful career as a Salsa dancer and find out that he still loves hip hop and gatsby’s. Peep it!

Jeru the Damaja’s tour commences in support of his upcoming single release “War” and forthcoming full length CD “Divine Design” on Ashenafi Records. Jeru the Damaja (born Jeru Davis) aka D. Original Dirty Rotten Scoundrel hails from Brooklyn, NY where he was born and raised. Jeru spent his early years in East New York, Brooklyn being introduced to hip hop music in the local parks “before it was popular” as he says. After completion of high school Jeru knew exactly what he wanted to do, be an MC. Influenced at the time by soon to be legends like Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, KRS One and Kool G Rap Jeru set out on his quest while he worked part time jobs in Manhattan.

Due to an unforeseen illness, Jamaican poet Jean Binta Breeze will not perform at Urban Voices 2003. In her place, Urban Voices will introduce Jo’burg, Durban and Cape Town to rising poet, Staceyann Chin. This provocative writer and performer appears in South Africa fresh from her debut on Broadway as a featured poet in the Tony-award nominated theatre production, Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway.
