DJ Quik (DVD) – VISUALISM (Eponic/Fortress DVD)

21 July 2003 No Comment

Everywhere you look in this day in age, you will get a DVD with your favourite rapper/DJ or musician. So it is no surprise that with the advent of DVD’s being released weekly in the US by your favourite rappers that DJ Quik releases his own, Visualism.

Quik has been doing his thing for close to 12 years now and it is fitting for him in 2003 to bring us his own DVD.
DJ Quik started out in the late 80’s doing demos in his house in Compton, California, whilst NWA and many others were blowing up the west coast rap scene with gansta raps. On his debut album, ‘QUIK IS THE NAME’, Quik tells the tale of funky young brother just doing his thang. By lightly touching on gangster tales like his other west coast partners, Quik quickly gained the respect of fans and fellow artists. With 6 albums and hundreds of production credits under his belt, Quik is probably the most underrated rap star and producer in the world. With sales of over 55 Million records worldwide Quik is definitely the name.

This DVD shows us Quik in the studio and on stage. It takes us on a journey whilst Quik is out promoting his new album ‘UNDA THE INFLUENCE’. From Los Angeles to Seattle and Portland Quik rocks stages and records shops. Quik is very much into schooling viewers about musicianship. Got to say I never knew Quik was good with the piano. Quil also tells us why he likes the MPC3000 drum machine so much.

The bonus features contains full length music videos from his hits, ‘TONITE’, ‘BORN AND RAISED IN COMPTON’, ‘QUIK IS THE NAME’ and his new single ‘TROUBLE’. I have to say that ‘TROUBLE’ is da ish! Rappers Suga Free and AMG also make guest appearances here. Suga Free is all pimped out and chilling with his blow dried hair. HI-C, “the dude that told you to do it froggie style” is all over this DVD. Quik’s live shows don’t have no pyrotechnics like your Puffy’s or Dre’s but it’s still on point. A lot of alcohol get’s thrown around at DJ Quik shows and like all rap DVD’s there is always some flesh to be seen. Nice to see that Quik has a huge Australian fanbase. The moving tribute to Mausberg, ’50 WAYS’ is tight. Mausberg, was one of the few rappers Quik was tight with. Quik has really worked with a wide range of artists including, 2PAC, R.KELLY, DR.DRE, SNOOP DOGG, EIGHTBALL & MJG, NATE DOGG, EL DEBARGE & TONY, TONI, TONE.

Quik is also known, not just for his music but also for his numerous hairstyle changes everytime he drops a new album. You can see his hairstyles in all they glory here, he even sports a shaven head! An interesting scene is the one where Quik autographs a lady’s g-string, interesting shit!

David Blake aka DJ Quik comes across as a very down to earth fella, and we like him and his beats too! He is a very good damn talented musician. The DVD shows you alot but not enough. A pity that we didn’t get to see videos and music from his album’s, ‘WAY 2 FONKY’, ‘SAFE ‘N SOUND’ & ‘BALANCE & OPTIONS’. Also what about his past beef with fellow Comptonite, MC Eiht. WATGATAN? And most of all we didn’t get to see how Quik actually makes his beats or maybe he could’ve given us some of his secrets. Hope there is a part two coming soon.
