Nas – Made you look – God’s Son DVD Review by Rush

25 September 2003 No Comment

I can still remember when Nas made his first appearance on a track called “Live At The Barbecue” by Main Source. 1994 he dropped Illmatic on us. This album brought Nas to the forefront of the hip hop game. We fast forward to 2003 almost ten years after dropping that influential album as he decides to drop in for a live performance. Not in New York or London but via a new video format that was labeled digital video disk aka DVD. For us that were not fortunate enough to be at the event we have to settle for the DVD until Sony brings Nas out to South Africa.

God Son Live was shot in Nas’ hometown of New York at a venue called the Webster Hall. The venue was packed with people waiting to see Nas perform which happens to be his first live performance in his hometown in over three years. The hall seemed very quaint to be holding an artist of Nas’s calibre with not a lot of lighting and special affects normally associated with a “big” name artist. From the start the show is all hyped up as he opens his performance with “The Cross“. The show reaches a high point when he goes into a track that proved why he got 5 mics and not just the one he is talking about, to add fuel to the squashed beef they decided to drop “Ether” his battle track aimed at fellow New York native Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z. The crowd goes into a frenzy.

The dvd is a mix of his old stuff that brought him into the game and his latest word. It would have been nice if he could get Lauryn Hill to share the stage with him for his track “If I Ruled The World“. The vid also has some special guest like DMC of legendary rap group Run DMC. He was telling the crowd how long Nas has been in the game and that he is not just dropping rhymes to make money but that he has been educating people with his lyrics. The DVD ends of with a track called “Made You Look” but he returns with the remix featuring Jadakiss and Ludacriss all on one stage for the remix.

This dvd is a must see – hidden with classic jewels from his old shit right up to the new and as a hidden bonus we also have behind the scenes looks at the making of the “Made You Look” and “I Can” video’s. Nas also drops us with a interview. If you a fan of Nas and hip hop in general pick up this vid. You won’t be disappointed.
