Emile YX “Jansen”, of South African Hip Hop Group, Black Noise – I have been teaching through hip hop culture for the past 10 years. In 1993 Emile decided to leave the teaching profession to tour with Black Noise. Read more for info on his latest CD.

It was during this tour that he confirmed his view of the power of hip hop to address various issues that youth are faced with in South Africa. Being from the Cape Flats and having a teaching diploma, gave him an approach that would change views on hip hop in South Africa, Sweden, Norway and Germany. While touring around in South Africa and learning about the local music industry he learned that people buy according to racial stereotypes. It has not spilled over to local hip hop yet, but he learned that irrespective of race, everyone wants to learn about the various facets of hip hop. The elements of hip hop being MCing (Rapping), DJing, B-boying (breakdancing), Writing (graffiti) and Knowledge of self. He has taught youth about hip hop throughout South Africa, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium and Namibia. While he has been teaching about hip hop, the real revolutionary hip hop has taught him about being African and being proud of Africa.

The real hip hop, unfortunately, will rarely be found on TV or in the media, as it is essentially revolutionary by nature. It takes youth from the ghettos around the world and educates them into strong-willed revolutionaries as it has done for him, Black Noise, Shaheen and Ready D of Prophets of the City and many more that are not in the media. True hip hop fights the stereotypes that media associate with hip hop, like gangs and violence. True hip hop celebrates the beauty of our sisters as Queens and Goddesses. True hip hop illuminates the dark view that is perpetuated of the ghetto and the black man. TRUE HIP HOP has helped Emile send youth to represent South Africa at the World Breakdancing Champs in Germany since 1997. It has helped him host events nationally and internationally. It has helped me record and release 4 compilation CDs, a local group named Plain Madnizz and now his own CD. It has given me knowledge to release the first local hip hop magazine, Da Juice and manage Black Noise, the oldest and longest surviving hip hop group in South Africa. We established a record label, clothing label and book/ magazine publishing section to stop the complaining and do something for ourselves. This is the power of REAL HIP HOP. As a qualified teacher Emile has seen hip hop being revolutionary and now being used to market their products and negative images of black people. “I have seen “Public Enemy” enlighten African youth, so-called gangster rap create drive-bys and violence in the Cape Flats communities and I presently see it being used to sell the American dream in Africa,” said Emile.

It is for this reason that Emile released “Who Am I ?” – Conscious Rhymes for Unconscious times. It contains 10 songs filled with information. I am Proud of .. talks of pride in Africa and pride in the real hip hop for what it taught me. Coconut Man .is about black people who want to be white. Who Am I . speaks of the so-coloured search for identity in the so-called new South Africa. What the F&%* is real . talks of cloning, soups, reality TV shows, USA vs Iraq. Cape Flats Uprising .is a hope that people of the Cape Flats rise and stand together. African Sun . is about the power of the sun in Africa. Africa for Sale . Dollarism is buying away our heritage. Black Facts . Facts about Africa’s proud past. Civil – Lies . speaks of the lie of civil- lie- zation, nothing but camouflaged barbarism. Who taught you to hate yourself . speaks of Euro-cation” sold as education and its effects on Africans.
