DJ AS IF – The Biography

Djing now for 10 years, As-If originally broke onto the HipHop and turntablist scene in 1998 when she famously became the first ever female to make the UK DMC finals. Since then she has continued her turntablisms, entering various competitions.

Last year she competed as one of the four members of the DJ team ‘Surgical Cuts’ as defending UK team champions and again became the first ever female to reach this accolade. With Surgical Cuts she undertakes many other projects, Team battles, and showcases including their new live show with exceptional drummer Ed Funk providing the rhythms over live turntable manipulation called ‘Dab Hands’.They also produced a dj battle weapon and are currently working on they’re latest.

As-If combines her turntablism in her dj sets, creating a unique blend of HipHop, funk and original breaks whilst showcasing scratch skills. She has years of club experience and has been a resident for Grand Central and Fat City’s ‘Friends and family’ nights in both Brighton and Manchester for several years now, and was originally signed with the northern based labels in 1998 from then being involved in many of their DJ tours and djing for most US acts when performing and recording in this country and at their events and in the studio. She is currently prized and long standing resident at ‘Substance’at the Ocean Rooms in Brighton which was recently voted club of the year.

As-If has djed at countless events around the UK, at most prestigious clubs and many festivals, including Glastonbury, V, and many more. She also performs showcases for music functions, and regulary makes guest appearances at radio shows up and down the country.

DJ As-If has just returned from a world tour- ‘Sensurround’, where she performed at shows, took workshops and recorded for radio and television in 7 different countries, including Venezuala, India, Trinidad and returning to South Africa and Capetown where she has become a bit of a regular as she has now performed there on 3 seperate occasions, also having previously djed in Kenya, Canada and across Europe. There are also plans for events in several other countries in the near future.

Locally back at home As-If is Dance 2 Records Manager and HipHop and Funk specialist, hosts regular HipHop shows on the south coast and writes for two magazines. She works closely with UK label DefCon Records having recently recorded the cuts for their forthcoming release and album. As-If also collaborates with top uk female Mcs Wildflower and Tempa and has plans for future shows and vinyl releases.
