King Of The Streets (DVD) – Review

3 December 2003 No Comment

For nearly a decade, urban marketing has been a key element in the multi-billion dollar record business, with street teams as the heart and soul of hip hop promotion. While some perceive them as hired litterbugs, there’s a lot more to the job than just handing out flyers and posters.

After watching this movie I realised just how far behind South African promoters are. The team work and dedication these promoters show for their clients is one of the main reasons why their artists succeeds.

What was interesting for me was the rivalry between Ruff Ryders and Bad Boy Entertainment street teams. Putting stickers over each others or even ripping off the other street teams posters is a normal occurance. Even more interesting is the methods they use to promote.

I would suggest this DVD for those who are promoters or wannabee promoters. There are some fundamental things you could learn here, like methods e.g. Wrap around pole posters, napkin wall stickers, or even extreme cases of flyer litter. What I think is most important for a promoter to learn is to watch how the street teams work in phases. They practically start off small and build up until the artist is ready to perform. These are basically similar to the techniques that they teach project managers. Because promoting an album is a project.

Another highlight was when they talked about the double standards coming from city officials. All over the city you would get “legal” advertising in the form of highway banners, posters etc. However street teams are looked at as a nuisance or a threat to public safety. Where some of the interviewees in the film kept on talking about double standards others talked about coming up with new ways or a new direction for street teams to take it to the next level.

So if you want to properly promote your project and be entertained at the same time then this movie is for you. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone. Word of warning though, there are no Special Features on this DVD and all you get is the documentary. Check it out when you can.
