Deepspace5 – The Night We Called It A Day Biography

5 December 2003 No Comment

In 1997, members from underground hip-hop crews the Pride and Labklik, along with solo artist Sev Statik, all hooked up at the 1998 Cruvention gathering to work on some fresh material. Featuring humorous and intellectual rhymes and inspired jams, the result from those insane sessions became the group’s first independent release, a five song EP that sparked much interest in the underground hip-hop subculture.

Pulled from many different areas of the country, the collaborators in deepspace 5 have now synergistically combined their diamond-sharp talents to simply make a great full-length debut album for Uprok. Featuring fifteen tracks of creative and sharp experimental hip-hop, “The Night We Called It A Day” goes beyond the strict song-structures of overly commercial rap albums, expanding into true street art.

Members of deepspace5 include artists such as Mars ILL’s soul heir the manCHILD, who has been writing and performing hip-hop music since late 1995
with upstart crew the Pride (along with Sintax and The Recon). From ’95 to ’97, the Pride improved their craft, doing over 60 shows and witnessing God
work masterfully with the crowds they jammed for. With the Pride’s limited growth due to careers, school, and other factors, he went on to link up with
DJ Dust, who has been DJing for over ten years, influenced by everyone from Marley Marl to Mad Lib.

deepspace 5 also features:
Fred Bruno, who recently recorded an album for Uprok as well, which was the killer culmination of over eight years of skillful performing. After lunging forth from the shadows with guest apperances on tracks on records by artists including Urban Soldiers and Mars Ill, Fred delivers one of his finest material on “The Night We Called It A Day.”

Playdough, from ill harmonics, is a ubiquitous name in Christian hip hop these days. Many know him from his appearance with his primary group ill harmonics on MTV’s “The Cut,” and their amazing debut album on Uprok last year. He has also performed with Earthsuit, Tait, LA Symphony, Knowdaverbs, Grits, and many others.

DJ Beat of Circumsized Mind joins in as well, working the turntables with DJ Dust. There are others who have contributed to this breakthrough album as well, and their talents will enfold as the listener gives it the time and attention it deserves.
