C-Walk: It’s A Way Of Livin’ – DVD Review

8 December 2003 No Comment

Straight off the streets of South Central L.A., CJ Mac brings you a documentary about a gang ritual that has become a popular dance craze. Hear the opinions from the artists who made the C-Walk mainstream through music videos and live performances, and meet the original Crip gang members who started the walk.

This DVD gives insight into what is now a worldwide dance craze. People from New Zealand to Japan are doing the C Walk mostly brought to the fore by WC (from WC and the MADD Circle).

This DVD was produced by CJ Mac, another veteran of the West Coast rap world. He takes you into the streets of LA and shows you how real gang members practice the art of C Walking. To them it’s not an innocent dance. It’s a way of showing your affiliation to the gang by using your full body. There were times, and probably still today, that you cannot do the C Walk just when you want to. You could get killed for that. Ice T, Snoop and other OG’s give their opinion throughout the movie.

Should only gang members practice the walk or can anybody apply it to their dance moves? The feeling I got from the movie is that it’s okay to do it, but one should respect where it comes from. Today many kids are doing it without having an understanding. CJ Mac did a good job by educating kids on the disadvantages of joining a gang while at the same time entertaining. The message is subliminal but clear: Joining a gang may seem like an “in” thing but you will pay for it with your life or a prison sentence one day. What was interesting was the Director’s comments towards the end where CJ Mac talks about how gangs can be seen as a temporary positive too. For instance a kid’s mother is begging for crack or heroin. He can no longer see his mother as family and the closest alternative for him might be the gang.

Throughout the DVD you are entertained with dance moves, and it was good to see different variations of it. Sometimes you see elements of bboying and moonwalking. Then you get to see different people do the C Walk. From clowns (Clown Walk) to cheerleaders, mainstream artists and then of course original gang members.

This was a very entertaining DVD mostly because this particular topic is rarely discussed. While I would not watch this over and over again I’ll certainly pull it out once every few months. So if you want to get a bit of history, be entertained and you like West Coast rap and dancing, then this DVD is for you.
