Wave Twisters – Special Edition – DVD Review

24 December 2003 No Comment

I know that this DVD was released 2 years ago but some of us are not that lucky to get it when it came out. Besides having seen trailers before I only saw it for the first time this year. Here’s what we thought about the Wave Twisters DVD.

I must admit here that I was never really a fan of animated movies. Movies like Ghost In The Shell and Animatrix certainly made me change my mind so when I got this DVD I was actually looking forward to it.

This DVD is packed. When I say packed I mean that it will occupy you for hours, days or even weeks. It’s the kind of DVD you can pull out every other month and still not get bored.

The movie is based on Q-Bert’s album. He had made this album and they had an idea to make a movie out of it. So as they had shown in the additional features they sat down and tried to put a picture to the songs. Similar to the concept of Pink Floyd’s The Wall movie. After what seemed like a very long process the result was this movie.

Basically the story is about a group of people who want to teach Hip Hop (keep it alive) to the rest of the universe. In this movie hip hop is seen as a lost art and they have to contend with villains and various obstacles who stand in their way.

You could easily align this movie with what is happening today in the world where real hip hop (bboy/dj/graffiti/emcee/beatbox) is being thrown below the shadows to make way for corporate designed “hip hop”. Maybe this movie is what the future will probably look like where real hip hop will only be practiced by a few and forgotten by many.

I continue to watch this movie over and over again because there are some things you don’t see on the first watch. The way this was made was brilliant. An amalgamation of animation, photo collages and 3d make this something to be remembered.

As I said before, the loads of DVD extra’s will both interest you and entertain for hours. As many of us have experienced, we buy a DVD and feel that we were cheated. But with Wave Twisters you really get your money’s worth. In fact you get more for your money on this DVD.

I see this movie as a collectors item. Something that will be appreciated now and in the future when you are old and grey. We recommend that you buy this.
