British Hip Hop Artist ‘Late’ Releases Biggest Posse Track In The World Ever

5 January 2004 No Comment

LATE has been involved in the music scene since the late eighties, from the Breakin’ days to graffiti, promoting nights, presenting radio shows, playing in clubs, doing various PA’s, writing reviews and features in magazines, LATE has done it all when it comes to hip-hop!

After being involved with a string of local acts, he went on to collaborate with Asian producer JUTTLA, on his groundbreaking 1998 debut album ‘Angels Aliens & Assassins’ on Eastern Pressure Recordings.

In 1995, together with TRICKSTA he founded Wolftown Recordings, and a year later in 1996 started to record with TRICKSTA, IMD and PROFESAH 194 as the group VILLAINS. As recording began for the debut album “Welcome To Wolftown”, LATE also found time to drop freestyles for various mixed tapes including DISORDA’s “UK Hustlers” series. In December 1999 VILLAINS dropped their debut single “UK Sound”, a track that is now considered a ‘UK Hip-Hop Classic’ with the video getting played on MTV and Rapture TV. It received 5/5 reviews in HHC and DJ Magazine and got supported by a number of top DJ’s including the BBC’s Excalibah, Skitz, Tim Westwood & Steve Lamacq. In the May of the following year VILLAINS dropped the excellent “Gotta Get The Cash”, and then the album “Welcome To Wolftown” in October 2000. A string of live dates all over the UK and numerous radio & Internet interviews, as well as features in all the music press has made the industry know about LATE ‘the artist’ and his label ‘Wolftown Recordings’.

In 2001 LATE continued his hard work with VILLAINS and began to collaborate with overseas acts, as well being one of the executive producers and guest rappers on the VICIOUS CIRCLE’s album “Bagged Out”. LATE together with TRICKSTA then went on to form the group WOLFTOWN COMMITTEE and recording began. The first release was the limited edition EP called “Artform Technique”/”Could It Be” which was well received by the media and got 5/5 reviews in Muzik and DJ Magazine. ‘Legendary Status’ continued to be constructed with LATE making an appearance on fourteen out of the twenty-one tracks on the album. The full-length album dropped January 2003 and excelled WOLFTOWN COMMITTEE into one of the leading rap groups in the UK, with their video to their single ‘Boxed’ being played over fifty times on the SKY Digital TV Station ‘Channel U’, as well as the same video featuring in the UK hip-hop documentary ‘Independent Hype’. LATE also performing the track ‘Think’ live for the Carlton TV programme ‘Xposure’ that has been screened to over 600,000 people on ITV.

During 2002 and 2003 LATE recorded a mini-album project called ‘International Rhyme Spittin EP’ which features a whole host of underground MC’s from all over the globe. This is a revolution in Independent hip-hop as LATE has got together no less than fifty nine artists to collaborate with him on a CD release that features nine hefty tracks and the biggest posse track in the world ever with ‘Open Mic Session’ (The International Remix). For LATE it’s a showcase of his music and a project he wants to continue to do. From being actively involved in hip-hop for fifteen years, LATE has now firmly stamped his mark in the independent scene. He has featured on a number of home-grown tracks including ‘Spaghetti Junction’ with DADDY ASH, SKINNYMAN, MC SKEME, EASTBORN and CLASS A, the DOYEN D album ‘End Game’ and ‘Rugged Style, Wolftown Collobo’ with CASHNO, JAI BOO and D’BLACK. LATE also featured on US releases by KIDD X on the album ‘X Marks The Spot’ out of San Jose, CEE ROCK ‘THE FURY’ album ‘Bringin Tha Yowzah’ alongside MIKEY D (from MAIN SOURCE) and PROMOE from LOOP TROOP, the DSO album by BUSHWICK BILL (GETO BOYS) out of the South and TA GUERRERO’s compilation ‘Disrapish’ from the West Coast. It makes you think if there are other rappers working as hard as LATE in this UK hip-hop game!

LATE is not just involved in hip-hop… he is hip-hop!

LATE has impressed the hip-hop community for over two decades. As the main rapper in the group VILLAINS he is responsible for those nineties UK rap classics ‘UK Sound’, ‘Hustlin Hard’ and ‘Dark Visions’ off the album ‘Welcome To Wolftown’. Then in the winter of 2001 he formed the group WOLFTOWN COMMITTEE with TRICKSTA, and in January 2003 dropped their debut twenty-one-track album ‘Legendary Status’. LATE has collaborated with a string of worldwide underground artists and has appeared in four music videos shown on MTV, MTV Base, MTV France, Rapture TV and Channel U. LATE has also featured on UK and US rap documentaries, mixed tapes and websites. He has been well received by the press and received reviewed in all of the top music press including Music Week, Billboard Magazine, NME, The Face, Murder Dog, Muzik, DJ Magazine, Breakin Point, HHC, Big Smoke, Jockey Slut and many more.

Now in 2003 LATE unleashes the much talked about ‘International Rhyme Spittin EP’. LATE has been actively releasing music since 1998 and is without a doubt one of the most hardworking MC’s in the UK. This EP is a celebration of independent hip-hop and is the first UK release to feature such a wide and diverse range of styles and artists. According to the artist in question, this ethic comes from growing up in climate of when hip-hop fans checked for all coasts and all styles in the ‘golden age of hip-hop’ when ‘hip-hop was hip-hop’ and wasn’t segregated into pigeon holes and sub genres. LATE brings these times back with a selection of artists that he respects and listens to, and some artists that respect and listen to LATE.

So here we really do have it all. From the straight freestyle b-boy flows and laid back deliveries, to the grimy cold spittin’ and reality rap styles. With all angles covered these tracks are worth their weight in gold and the ‘International Rhyme Spittin’ is also the third CD release that the production team of TRICKSTA & PEZ have made. Quality Rhymes and quality beats.

CD TRACKLISTING:

1. ‘Intro’
LATE kicks off the EP with some positive vibes. He explains what it is you are about to enter. ‘We are doing what they can’t do… this is the underground moving forward’.

2. ‘International Spittin’ (Featuring CEE ROCK “THE FURY”)
This funk-fuelled hip-hop joint features CEE ROCK “THE FURY” from Jamaica, Queens, New York. When CEE ROCK “THE FURY” asked LATE and 10SHOTT from VICIOUS CIRCLE to be guest rappers on his track ‘Watch Out For My Meta’ for his forthcoming album, it was inevitable that CEE ROCK “The FURY” would feature. He has worked with the likes of LOOP TROOP, RAW PRODUCE and MIKEY D from MAIN SOURCE (Wyld Pitch Records) and regularly appears on New York mixed tapes and CD’s. What we have here is a future hip-hop classic by two of the world’s leading independent rappers from different sides of the water. Watchout for CEE ROCK “THE FURY”’s full-length album ‘Bringin Tha Yowzah’ dropping early 2004 on Wolftown Recordings/Turmic/!Handzup!

3. ‘7 Months’ (Featuring DADDY ASH from BLACK BRITANNIA, VALU from THEE ABSENT, OSHIN from 57th DYNASTY, CIPHER from MOORISH DELTA 7, MR. WIZ from KRISPY, DOYEN D and DJ AMO).
This ragga tinged bouncing groove is the perfect soundscape for a host of English talent to drop science on the fact that when we put the clocks back in the UK the weather is ‘dark 7 months of the year’. Representing different manors comes a host of underground homegrown MC’s. From London town we have VALU from THEE ABSENT (Café Recordings) and DADDY ASH from BLACK BRITANNIA (Abduction Entertainment), from the second city of Birmingham we have CIPHER from 7 Entertainment’s MOORISH DELTA 7, from Sheffield DOYEN D (Street Legal), from Manchester MR. WIZ from KRISPY (Damn Right! Records) and from Wolverhampton we have a duo of Wolftown Recordings artists; DJ AMO and the visionary himself… LATE. UK Hip Hop history in the making.

4. ‘Cold World’ (Featuring K RINO from SOUTH PARK COALITION, KUWAIT, PROBLEM 13 & MIAMI MAC from SOUTHERN AFFIALIATE).
This Dirty South collaboration features a host of raw grimy MC’s. It features Houston reality rap legend K RINO, who has released five albums and been in the game since 1983. K RINO is a rapper that LATE has been into since 1991. For LATE this is an honour to have him on this track. K RINO founded SPC and has collaborated with some of South’s biggest names including POINT BLANK, GANGSTA NIP and 25 TO LIFE, as well featuring on many albums released on RAP-A-LOT RECORDS. Also from Houston comes KUWAIT who dropped his album ‘The Anthology’ featuring SHYHEIM from WU TANG CLAN. TRICKSTA met up with KUWAIT in Miami along with PROBLEM 13 & MIAMI MAC from SOUTHERN AFFILIATE and the outcome has been a track that touches on the way the world is turning. “Cold World” is a musical composition that is history in the making, and is by far the deepest track on the EP.

5. ‘United By Flows’ (Featuring PQ and SIZE8 from VICIOUS CIRCLE)
LATE first linked PQ when they did a jam together in Wolverhampton. After much discussion, LATE & TRICKSTA decided to sign up PQ for an exclusive EP for Wolftown Recordings for 2004. This track was recorded the day he came back to Wolves to talk about the deal. The South London rapper was initially a part of STONE CIRCLE and SOCIAL MISFITS ENTERTAINMENT, but now goes alone as a solo artist. Also featured on this track is SIZE8 from VICIOUS CIRCLE, who drops hefty along side PQ and LATE. This is a track of unity, unity through music, unity through hip-hop but above all unity through flows. Positive vibes and laid back Wolftown-London funk. Sit back and listen to the flows.

6. ‘Ghetto Diplomat’ (Featuring MUSICAL SNIPER and JAI BOO from WOLFTOWN COMMITTEE)
This collaboration was recorded on MUSICAL SNIPER’s last visit to the UK. Originally from Jamaica but now living in Toronto (Canada), he was formerly known as RAPPA ROBERT and alongside TIPPA LEE he began a successful DJ duo, before going solo and working with some of the reggae’s greats like ROBBIE SHAKESPHERE, MONTY ALEXANDER and GLEN DA COSTA, as well as releasing his superb album “Rough Upbringing”. Also on the track is the female talent of JAI BOO who is currently enjoying the success of ‘A So It Go’ on the superb WOLFTOWN COMMITTEE album ‘Legendary Status’. MUSICAL SNIPER, JAI BOO and LATE explain that no matter where you are in the world you can always connect with light-minded musicians and get a vibe! These three talents have joined forces to smash this uplifting euphoric hip-hop anthem. This track is already being championed by various radio DJ’s.

7. ‘San Jose To Wolftown’ (Featuring KIDD X and SD3)
‘It’s executive decisions when our labels collaborate/Kidd X, SD3, LATE/ let us elaborate’… Here we have a cut that features three rappers with their own labels, that all recorded albums. This track originally featured on KIDD X’s ‘X Mark The Spots’, but now remixed and re-recorded this version is setting airwaves crazy on the West Coast of America. Bay Area rappers KIDD X and SD3 drop that funky old skool flow that is sure to peeps across the globe vibed up. Some real West Coast vibes for ya Walkman, ya Boombox and ya Low-rider!!! Feel the funk, feel the soul, and feel the groove, as Wolverhampton meets San Jose.

8. ‘Open Mic Session’ (Featuring 10SHOTT, DASS & WAYNEY G)
The stage is set! Yes, this is the Wolftown freestyle spectacular that features, 10SHOTT (Vicious Circle, Wolftown Committee), Wolftown’s latest signing DASS and WAYNEY G. 16 Bars each, each rapper holds there own on this straight up hip-hop banger. It’s an open mic session, no hooks just straight spittin. UK classic!

Well if you are going to remix it you might as well do it properly!!! This remix features over 50 independent rappers and singers and is defiantly history in the making. Never before has a track featured so many artists from different parts of the world. From Portland, Queens, Flatbush, Indiana, London, Jamaica, Tacoma, San Jose, Brooklyn, Toronto, Baton Rouge, Pittsburgh, Houston, Regents Park, Kansas, Glasgow, Paris and of course Wolverhampton. This is just the tip of the iceberg and is a reflection of the artists that LATE listens too.
