You Got Beef? – The Beef DVD Review

9 January 2004 No Comment

The definitive look into the deep and harsh world of high profile beefs told by the artists themselves. The mc battle… Hip hop’s war of words… Who’s the illest on the mic… What happens when the raw energy of the inner city spills over from the studio to the streets.  It’s Beef!

This has got to be one of the best DVD’s I’ve watched this year. At first I was a bit sceptical when I saw the cover and I thought that they would just be exploiting the beef situations in Hip Hop (coz it looked so Hollywood) but I was wrong. This is a powerful DVD that every, and I mean every Hip Hop head should watch. It documents in detail almost all of the important beefs that have existed throughout hip hop’s history. From Busy Bee vs Kool Moe Dee to BDP vs the Juice Crew. 50 Cent vs Ja Rule to the West Coast vs East Coast. It even has some underground beef’s like the Tru Life vs Mobb Deep beef.

This documentary is indepth and that’s the way documentary’s should be. The old skool footage, like those of the Busy Bee/Kool Moe Dee and BDP/Juice Crew are enough to buy this DVD alone. Each beef has the artists involved interviewed so that they could tell their versions of it. I enjoyed the BDP/Juice crew beef the most. KRS one explains in detail how the songs “South Bronx” and “The Bridge Is Over” came about, even talking about how much it costed them to do the tracks in the studio. There is some old skool footage of when the South Bronx and The Bridge Is Over is performed live. I’ve never seen such a hyped up crowd like that (wish I was there). KRS One, as always, is a pleasure to listen to as he tells us that if it wasn’t for MC Shan there would be no KRS One today.

What is pleasing is to see that most of these beefs have been squashed today. However the DVD also highlights beefs that ended up in death, namely the Biggie Vs 2Pac “beef”. It also shows us an indepth look into an existing beef, namely between Ja Rule and 50 Cent.

I watched this DVD from beginning to finish without skipping a chapter. The visuals on here and the way this was produced was excellent, especially how they move from one chapter to the next. It keeps you watching – never getting bored. You also get to watch some bonus footage of the Nate Dogg golf course incident. Pretty hectic stuff. But damn, the Tru Life guys get really rowdy on this one, shooting a few shots into the air for the camera man. Oh ya and the Damon Dash incident with the French pimps was funny. This DVD is highly entertaining but also educational – especially the old skool segment. By the way part 2 is coming out soon, can’t wait. Get it, rent it – now.
