Hailing from the Rocky Mountains they did not go over the mountain with their delivery they went straight through it and unleashed a release on Basementalism Records titled “As Iron Sharpens Iron”. Check the album cover a mic covered with some fertile ground – what could that mean? I digged around the ground and caused somewhat of a earthquake but what the heck Cali is known for is it’s quakes and this group is one of them that’s making the Richter scale go haywire. Check the interview I did with them.

Ok I finally got some time to sit down and listen to your debut album and it just left me with some questions that I need you to answer for me. Who are the Procussions? I know you a trio but can u expand on that for us?

Three members.  Mister Jay (m.c.) Res (m.c.) Stro (m.c. producer). Started out in 1998. “As Iron Sharpens Iron” is our first album. We all met in Colorado.

Ya’ll rep the Nuggets hey or is it Lakers now? What’s the scene like in Colorado? I just read this piece that told me you were in rival b-boy crews that just decided to blend ya talent and make this shit explode for not just the Procussions but the other natives that’s left behind in Colorado.

Well I’m not into sports really. I played a full season of basketball in Jr. High and only ran up and down the court. I shot once and missed. I will wear a Nuggets shirt though to let heads know where we are from. Yes we were in rival b-boy crews. The city we lived in, Colorado Springs, only had half a million people so if someone was doing hiphop you knew about it for sure, so beef was easy to come by though it was light hearted. We squashed it quick and decided to work together. Not JUST for the Procussions or Colorado but for people. Us. You and me. That way no one will be left behind. But..yeah..we love Colorado and love being from it. Big ups to the Rockies!!

To be honest this is the first time I heard about a crew from Colorado and I was eager to hear what’s coming from there, anyway this is a African based hip hop site and I would like to know what does goes through ya mind when u hear there is hip hop out in Africa?

When we hear there is hiphop in Africa I’m not surprised. Hiphop can be a very powerful tool. We where inspired by it in first grade. That’s power. How we use it..well that’s the real question I think. But yeah big ups to Africa. I’m so glad to have some hiphop family out there. Just know that you have some fam here.

Ok I know each one of you got a unique taste and artist that inspired you to get involved can each one tell me who it was and what made you stay involved within this art?

Stro- Quincy Jones, Joni Mitchel, and Tribe Called Quest
Res- Del the funky homosapien, most 80’s pop, Jimi Hendrix
Mr.j- Grand Funk Railroad, D.J. Shadow, Mass Influence, I really like Mars Ill and of course the whole 93 to 96 years of hiphop!

Moving to L.A. was it a good decision? Wouldn’t you say you just took something away from a scene that needs people like you to inspire the growth or can peeps out your way find inspiration in the move?

Moving has proven to be a great decision so far. L.A. is full of opportunities! A lot which Colorado does not have and may not have for a while. People are not looking to CO for music they are not wondering what kind of music we are making so we went out to make them look. I think once the attention is brought to this part of the U.S. then it will open doors for a lot of people. We where inspired by the move and I think the move inspires others. Colorado supports and understands it.

Shit I like the musical direction that you guys have. A lot of jazz influence mixed with some modern day orchestra. I can appreciate that. Who leads the sound making decision?

Stro produces the music but we all come up with the ideas. The beats all come together differently. Sometimes Stro will have just a drum kit and then I’ll come in (Mr.j) and be like “yo, that would sounds tight if we used this” and Res will come in and say “yeah and add this” that’s a good day sometimes we will talk for hours about a hook or something. Either way it all gets down as a group.

Fall 2003 is the slated release of your debut and yes I just said the debut album is titled “As Iron Sharpens Iron”. How long has that been in the making and would u say you satisfied with it?

The album “As Iron Sharpens Iron” has a wide span of time and music. Some music on there is when you first got togther but most is of the last two years. We wrote a lot of songs and kept what we felt best describes us musically.

What’s your plans for this year? Would you be venturing on any tour or any holiday to South Africa?

Right now we are focusing on promoting this album. We have been doing as many shows as possible. The Procussions LOVE to do shows I think its our most favorite thing to do. We have a couple small tours booked with some really dope groups. We are impatiently waiting to get overseas espically to South Africa! As far as future future, well we just keep trying to make music. Maybe some side projects. We have another single due out in 2004 we look forward to that.

As far as your release goes where can people get it and would dj’s be able to get it on vinyl as well?

We have all our music on wax so the d.j’s. can definitely pick it all up. (Can’t forget the d.j.!!!) You can always pick up anything Procussions at www.theprocussions.com . Most online hiphop shops carry it (if not holler at em) and most underground hiphop shops carry it (if not holler at em) be like “Hey, you got that new Procussions album?” if they say “no:” say…”Well why not!”.

Thanks for your time and thanks for blessing us with your music. Can u give the heads some shouts in Africa and hopefully we can connect soon?

Big Big Shout to Africa! Thank you for your support! Thank you for your influence! Where would hiphop music be with out ya? Peace and God Bless!
