Hip-hop in South Africa has been underground since the early eighties. It started to gain some light towards the late nineties and early 2000’s. In the last two years some excellent groups have emerged and demanded the public’s attention. The latest to surface is the incomparable Zulu Mobb.

The name Zulu MOBB is short for Zulu Masters Of Black Bravery. They are a talented duo of rappers from Soweto and they say that the name represents black empowerment and the strength of the people put together with competent leadership like it was in the days of Shaka.

The group consists of Inshalla( a direct to Arabic translation of his real name, Thato ya Modimo) and Desdemona (no significant meaning to the name). They met in 2000 in the Sowetan township Orlando East, where they were the only rappers in their area. They plan to put their township on the map with their debut album called Corner Bullet n’ Knife coming out at the end of July. The album was recorded by UTHOHT ENTERPRISES and is being released by the newly formed SHEER HIP-HOP, a division of SHEER MUSIC.

CORNER BULLET n’ KNIFE is a straight-up-and-down description of township life as seen through the eyes of these two lyricists. It is already gaining attention from music lovers nation-wide from the airplay that their heart-felt single, Comfort Me, is receiving. The album was entirely produced by a new production wonder-twin team named Cloneproof, also signed to UTHOHT ENTERPRISES. Incorporating the usual popular hip-hop elements, this album goes one step further by keeping its identity wholly African in nature.

Lyrics are in English, Zulu and Sotho, and appeal across cultures. Stepping out from the underground where they have gained substantial recognition, critical acclaim and a firm fan base, SHEER HIP-HOP takes them to the mainstream.

These two emcees do not rap about rap like most other hip-hop artists do. The album “Corner Bullet ‘n Knife” was born out of lyrical and musical expression that relates directly to the youth of today, and their daily lives. Executive-Produced by SPEX, a well-respected pioneer in the genre, this album is on the cutting edge. It has a distinctive “kassie” touch in it. The group have featured as individuals and together with some of South Africa’s finest and most established M’rappers – now they take it to the next level by presenting something completely their own!

Sure to create massive waves on the scene, an album of the finest quality with very relevant messages. Enough said here, listen to the album and be converted if you’re not yet convinced!
