Emile YX? “Jansen” of Black Noise, African Hip Hop Indaba, African Battle Cry and Heal the Hood Project, has just completed his second book, My Hip Hop is African and Proud.

“I was tired of reading academics version of what hip hop is about and the that they wrote about something they never lived or really felt. I decided to not complain any longer, but show how hip hop has assisted me in finding myself as an African. Hip Hop has affected me and thus many of the people that I have come into contact with. Hip Hop is more than what is in the media that comes into South Africa from the USA. What most people don’t realise is that there is another hip hop that exists which is seldom spoken of in the general media globally. It is this hip hop that helps send South African youth to the world breakdance champs in Germany, it is this hiphop that has helped me to find myself and helped me have friends on almost every continent on this planet. This hip hop has empowered me to write this book and given me back my dignity after Apartheid. This hip hop is MY HIP HOP. "

The book also researches why Africans hate themselves so much and in various rhymes, articles and short stories I wrote over the last 10 years or so. It deals with the self hatred that is the hidden cause of crime, deaths on South African roads, pollution, corruption, relationships, economics, poverty and many other issues that affect Africans on the continent and planet. This book is a very personal journey through the history of hip hop in South Africa, through my eyes. I am one of South Africa’s’ oldest hip hoppers often called the Godfather/ Grandfather of Real Hip Hop culture in South Africa (which I don’t mind).

I am already working on creating a play based on the book. Black Noise CD and My 2nd solo CD, which can be expected early 2005, also has tracks that deal with issues that are covered in this book. This December also sees the release of Black Noise DVD called Hip Hop To Volume 1, which is a basic introduction to hip hop culture. Volume 2 will deal with b-boying “breakdancing” and will be recorded in December by a Swedish film producer. You can expect many references to the content of the book in these DVDs.

So save your money and get your family members a copy of My Hip Hop is African and Proud this holidays. I am self publishing this book and will only have a limited number of copies of the first edition, that will be shopped to bigger publishers. If you want to order a copy of the book (R75, 100SEK, 20 US$), DVD (R150, 150 SEK, 30 US$), T-shirt (R85, 100 SEK, 20 US$) or CD (R75, 120 SEK, 15 US$), send your postal order to:
