The Kora All-Africa music awards are proud to announce the nominees for the 9th edition of the annual awards ceremony. Entries from throughout the African continent and the Diaspora were entered, and subjected to a rigorous judging process from a panel of judges from across the African continent…

The entries comprised of an impressively wide range musical genres, with the common factor being their connection to the African continent.

The result is a list of 103 artists from nations within the African continent and throughout the diaspora, including the Nigeria, Guadeloupe, Angola, Guinée, Zambia, Benin, Botswana, the U.S., Uganda, Congo, Martinique, South Africa and Ethiopia, to name a few.

The Kora Awards ceremony, set to be held on Sunday, 12th of December, 2004 at the Sandton Convention Centre, is the only awards ceremony that recognises and celebrates musical excellence amongst artists from the continent and the African diaspora. The artists certainly reflect this diversity – with a total of eighteen categories, the nominated artists include South African based Nigerian Kunle, kwaito Kingpin Kabelo, Ethiopian vocalist Tsedenia Gebremarkos, previous Kora Award winner Awilo Longoma, gospel group Joyous Celebration, Angolan sizzler Bruna, Togo’s King Mensah, and Cape Verde’s Dulce Mathias, amongst others.

“Each edition of the Kora’s teaches us a bit more about the rich and prolific musical culture of this incredible continent of ours” comments Ernest Coovi Adjovi, executive producer of the ceremony. “With each year, our list of entries grows, and we’re extremely grateful for this vote of confidence from our primary constituency – the artists. Without them, the Kora’s wouldn’t exist, and we look forward to putting on a ceremony that celebrates their craft and contribution to the African cultural movement.”

Indeed, the set, stage production and gala event promise to deliver a true African entertainment spectacular on the evening of December 12th . The production team, set designers and event coordinators are currently hard at work devising an event that will end the year on a high note, and showcase the best of Africa’s talent to the international audience who will be watching the Kora’s live. Through a partnership with Canal France International, the ceremony will be broadcast live to over 700 million viewers across Africa, Europe, the United States and the Caribbean.

The Kora Awards are also open to the public. Gallery tickets will be sold at Computicket nationwide and Corporate and VIP tables will be sold at the KORA Office. Please contact Cynthia or Claudia for table bookings at 011-884 8420.
