Overground – 9 Scandinavian Graffiti Writers

19 February 2005 No Comment

What is the overground? The Overground is an illustrious layout of 9 of Scandinavia’s best Graf writers who joined forces to bring us this amazing 176 page book edited with the help of Malcolm Jacobson and Tobias Barenthin Lindblad…

The book is laid out in dual languages to give us some insight into the deeply rooted writing style of those dedicated people who risked running on the railway lines to give us some amazing artwork that’s still outlawed and features the artwork of Rilo, Tele, Kegr, Ance and some other amazing writers that paved the way for other writers.

The book opens with a Ance statement “I don’t want to be a public figure”. Well I guess its to late to backup off that now. What is so lovely about this book is the storyline not just concentrating on the artwork but the story behind the people who created the actual artwork.

One thing I noticed while reading the book is that a lot of them points out to Dondi (may his soul R.I.P) as inspiration and movies such as Wildstyle and Beat street all played a huge influential role in aspiring them to stack up on the Krylon.

An artist whose work really freaked me at first peek was Ikaroz from his work to his words I could tell he is a perfectionist. 18 years is a long ass time in the game man and it could definitely not just be a pastime. He took it up to express his anger. Ikaroz boldly states “Graffiti is about solving problems”. I’m hoping more writers would take up that statement.

Freedom and the need to be free is one of the commandments that seem to run through the minds of all the people interviewed in this book. Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark all came together to share and trade these pictures and thoughts for this book just goes to show that these walls don’t lie.

While reading this book I would definitely advise you to play that “These walls Don’t Lie “ by Looptroop front man Promoe. The artifact is preserved in writing styles that could only be understood by youth who grew up with the cause to bring about change that would be seen as a rebellion by the masses!

Everybody that feels they want to learn more about hip hop and not just emceeing should pick up this book even if it’s a bootleg and tell them Rushay said say so.
