The plot revolves around Hellboy (Ron Perlman), a young demon that was summoned by Gregori Rasputin for the Third Reich during World War 2. He was meant to be used as the ultimate weapon to turn the tide of the war, but was captured by the Allies and raised by Professor Broom (John Hurt). Sixty years have passed since the war and Hellboy is at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence working as an operative under the tutelage of his father, Professor Broom. The other members of the team include, John T. Meyers, an FBI agent, Liz Sherman, a pyrokinetic and Abe Sapian, an aquatic humanoid who is a telepath. Rasputin returns after being resurrected by his lover to complete his mission of bringing the apocalypse.

His mother has a heart attack after seeing him get arrested during a protest. She is in a coma for eight months and during that time the Berlin Wall falls and the German Democratic Republic. She is an ardent Socialist and Alex knows the shock of the fall of GDR could kill her. He goes to great lengths to protect his mother from the truth with a lot of twists.

Louise (Laura Linney) is an admissions officer at Columbia University who comes across the name of an applicant, F. Scott Feinstadt (Topher Grace), who has the same name as her first love. Curious, she calls him up to arrange an interview and is surprised to hear the similarity of his voice on the telephone. He arrives late, a typical F. Scott Feinstadt characteristic and when he finally arrives he looks exactly like F. Scott Feinstadt. Soon after meeting each other they are involved in a passionate affair. It’s a very strange coincidence that the two F. Scott Feinstadt’s have almost everything in common but it’s not supernatural, it’s about Louise letting go of the past.
