Good Bye Lenin – Review

30 April 2005 No Comment

After Alex’s father defected from East Germany to the West his mother went into a deep depression and threw herself into her Socialist ideologies. His mother has a heart attack after seeing him get arrested during a protest. She is in a coma for eight months and during that time the Berlin Wall falls and the German Democratic Republic. She is an ardent Socialist and Alex knows the shock of the fall of GDR could kill her. He goes to great lengths to protect his mother from the truth with a lot of twists.

The film has excellent cinematography, is filled with great humour and has so many metaphors woven intricately into the plot that it deserves to be watched more than once. Films this good only come along every few years. The highlights include how Alex and Lara meet, the fake news broadcasts he and his friend create to keep up the ruse and Alex’s repackaging exploits to provide his mother with her favourite snacks. The list goes on why this film is great.

GOOD BYE LENIN is a beautifully made film that has received international acclaim and for good reason it’s brilliant so stop reading this review and go watch it already. Why are you still reading about one of the best films to be released this year when you could be watching it?
