The Ice Princess – Review

30 April 2005 No Comment

A high school science geek (Michele Trachtenberg) is told by her teacher she is eligible for a science scholarship; however she has to come up with a science project that will help her obtain the scholarship. She decides to use figure skating to illustrate the laws of physics. Then she gets bitten by the skating bug, takes a few lessons and discovers that she happens to be a skating genius as well. It’s an uphill battle for her because her mother (Joan Cusack) thinks relying on ones body (like an athlete) is a stupid way to get ahead in life. Then there is the former skating champion (Kim Cattrall) who is coaching her daughter (Hayden Pantierre) to be a champion and becomes the geek’s mentor.

THE ICE PRINCESS has a good story and the entire cast delivers an excellent performance, even the minor role actors make it interesting, however this is a DISNEY movie and therefore it gets a bit cheesy and mooshy when it doesn’t need to. THE ICE PRINCESS is definitely one of those “chase your dreams no matter what” movies and is entertaining. The figure skating scenes are breath taking and they had better be, it is a DISNEY movie after all.

THE ICE PRINCESS is totally aimed at the pre-teen/teen market. If you’re not a young girl between the age of 8 and 16 you might not like THE ICE PRINCESS. If however you are then THE ICE PRINCESS is one of the best films you’re going to watch this year and shouldn’t be missed.
