Annansi Clothing Co. Nominated For Fashion Award

11 October 2005 No Comment

The Fashion Group International in New York has nominated Africa-inspired street wear label Annansi Clothing Co. for the prestigious Rising Star Award. The award, given by a committee of fashion industry professionals, honors individuals who are “up-and-coming style-makers of the future”. Previous winners include Keanan Dufty, Ron & Ron, and Y & Kei. This nomination adds to the exciting year Annansi Clothing has had following involvement in two other groundbreaking fashion events: the Redefining African Style music and fashion launch, and Bring and Buy, a London Fashion Week project curated by renowned fashion photographer Nick Knight and i-D Magazine.

In September, Annansi Clothing Co. joined Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Björk, and Tilda Swinton amongst others for the Bring and Buy project, which raised $23,000 for Oxfam. The project was a collaboration between photographer Nick Knight’s award-winning SHOWstudio.com and UK-based fashion magazine i-D. Annansi Clothing’s Warriors t-shirt was one of 100 worldwide contributions “with a story behind it” which were photographed and featured in i-D Magazine’s October 2005 issue before being auctioned off on EBAY.

Earlier in the summer the Annansi Clothing Co. hosted Redefining African Style event drew a crowd from as far away as California to New York City’s Lower East Side in celebration of its Summer 2005 collection. The event featured artists Cho-san, The Ambassadoz, Sheba and The Arkitects who performed for an energetic crowd of supporters. This event was the first of its kind and brought emerging ur-ban-influenced African talents together under one roof.

Through his involvement in such monumental events, Annansi Clothing’s de-signer G. Kofi Annan has continued to create a label known for its unique quality and style. "I am overwhelmed by the continual recognition I have received from in-dustry professionals and supporters alike,” says Mr. Annan. "To be considered for such an important award is an honor." He goes on to say, "This is a milestone which shows that the world is ready for a fresh new image of African style and fash-ion".

Though this is a positive nod at the company’s efforts, there is still more work to be done and more boundaries to transcend. With this nomination, Annansi Cloth-ing Co. continues to bring its brand of refined African-inspired style to the global market. The Rising Star Award ceremony will take place in January 2006.
