First Case Alliance is a hip hop movement which started in 1998 (Khayelitsha – Cape Town) by 9 high school boys. They wrote poetry on black consciousness and the revolutionary struggle within the youth of South Africa. The streets of BK will rejoice when MMO (Money Makin’ Operation) finally drops their debut album, “We MMO” this Fall 2005. Consisting of TRIGG-NOMM (Trigga) & Itchy Finga Sha, MMO got their start from hustling the streets of Brooklyn and eventually toured the world as openers for the famed legendary rap crew, Wu-Tang Clan. Trigga says, “We are a Money Makin Operation…. but first we are poets.”

Zula in Long Street, Cape Town, once again plays host to an immaculate Hip Hop event putting a total of 9 DJs on stage in pairs with 4 turntable’s to their disposal. This means, that one DJ will be concentrating on keeping the dance-floor moving, giving the other the chance to show his skills. The night will also give the chance for local graf artist’s to show their stuff in the courtyard out back. The work will be sold to the highest bidder. Recently Eitan Prince, Radio Lecturer at the Department of Journalism & Media Studies at Rhodes University in Grahamstown did a presentation talking about Hip Hop – Old Skool to New (Folk Culture to commodity). To celebrate its upcoming 25th anniversary, in 2006, Tommy Boy is releasing HIP HOP ESSENTIALS 1979 – 1991, a foundational 12 volume CD collection featuring 144 extremely diverse tracks which have contributed to the groundwork of classic Hip Hop music. HIP HOP ESSENTIALS 1979 – 1991 was expertly compiled by executive producers Tom Silverman (founder and CEO of Tommy Boy) and Stu Fine (founder of Wild Pitch Records). With an introduction to the entire collection by Nelson George, each volume features a set of liner notes from a noted journalist such as Jeff Chang, Dan Charnas, Raquel Cepeda, Bill Adler, Brian Coleman, Toure, Harry Allen or Davey D. The First audition for "My Hip Hop is African and Proud" play is on the 26th November 2005 at 11H00 – 14H00 at Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone. Emile YX? of Black Noise, has created a hip hop dance play based on stories from his book by the same name and rhymes. The play will touch on issues of Afrocentricity, identity, hip hop then and now, lies in the industry, the power of truly being proud of being AFRICAN and my/ our hip hop versus their version of it. This will all be told through rhymes, poetry, dance, music and visuals. It is his plan to perform the play locally and then tour internationally. It will be complimented by a book, DVD, clothing line and album that Emile is currently working on…

Whoah, the lineup on this bill was plenty, it included Godessa, Jitsvinger, Ej Von Lyrik, Teba, Supadan, Each One Teach One….and many others as well. I arrived at the event with great expectation and I am happy to say that Ej Von Lyrik kicked some seriously brilllaint solo reggae tracks.  Her talent definitley holds no bounds and the great news is that this sister is finally working on something I have been personally and patiently waiting for – a solo album.  It’s high time…
