Scratch, beatboxer extraordinaire and member the Grammy award winning hip hop band The Roots, will be performing live at The Independent Armchair Theatre, Cape Town, on 30 November 2005. Scratch is 1/3 beat boxer, 1/3 vocal turntables and 1/3 organic producer. His work with The Roots has blown the minds of listeners worldwide. Everything a DJ can do with a turntable, he can do with his mouth! Where some may confuse him with Rahzel, The Godfather Of Noise, Scratch lifts the art of beatboxing to an entirely new plain, taking his incredible word warping and turntable imitation and fusing it with a lethal dose of his original beats. The Roots

Described by some as the godfathers of neo-soul/neo-hip-hop, the Philadelphia-based ensemble attracted worldwide attention in 1999 with the success of the Grammy Award-winning CD, Things Fall Apart. And with the 2002 disc, Phrenology, a blitz of well-timed TV appearances, a Coke TV ad and heavy tour schedule, the group has established itself as one of hip-hop`s most popular, versatile and critically acclaimed acts, with skyrocketing record sales and sold-out shows across the globe.

Scratch and The Roots

The roots first ran into scratch in 1990 at a Philadelphia talent show held at the urban education centre. the roots (then known as Square Roots) and scratch were in awe of one another as scratch performed with his other crew, Schoolz of Thought and wenthead to head with Square Roots. scratch has been a band member of The Roots ever since, touring relentlessly throughout the united states and the world.
