The CD

Hangin’ in and Hangin’ on is Brown’s debut album. In melodic rap songs he deals with his experiences on the streets of Cape Town, while working with street kids over a period of 5 years. The lyrics tell of his friends and their chosen path, sometimes funny, sometimes serious, sometimes shocking. It includes, among others, the Hit Single So you Wanna be a Gangsta, the melancholic So much Trouble, and Jerusalem, an obituary to his friends who lost their lives on the streets.

The Exhibition

The Concrete Jungle is a series of photographs, which Brown took during the period of 2001 – 2004, while working with street children in downtown Cape Town. Sometimes in a single photograph, sometimes in a collage, Brown’s art offers a unique insight into the complexity of the lives of street children. Each piece is themed and completed with a selection of lyrics from Brown’s songs. By having given to each other, learned from each other and walking with each other, Brown exposes the often misunderstood street kid culture, and shows in The Concrete Jungle that the tiny, dirty little “street kids” are really nothing more but children who want to be loved, cared for and understood.

The Book

Life Under the Table is the story of how the life of an American was divinely intertwined with the lives of Cape Town children, who decided to make the streets of the Mother City their home. It is a riveting must read. Having worked on ground zero for over three years, Ryan “Brown” Dalton offers the reader a unique insight into the complexity of the lives of street children. As he shares his many unbelievable, serious and often funny experiences, his love and commitment towards the street kids is revealed. By giving to each other, learning from each other and walking with each other, Brown exposes the often misunderstood street kid culture, and shows that the tiny, dirty little “street kids” are really nothing more but children who want to be loved, cared for and understood.

The Brown Foundation

Vision:

To see a day when there are no children living on the streets of downtown Cape Town.

Mission:

Rather than pumping more money into the Central Business District of Cape Town, in order to try and work towards getting the “street children” off of the streets, the Brown Foundation focuses on the disadvantaged communities in which the children come from. The Brown Foundation identifies and funds existing organizations and projects that are working hands on with youth at risk, building up structures of support for youth in disadvantaged communities, and, in turn, doing preventative work towards keeping children away from the streets.

Goals:

· In the legal form of a trust, The Brown Foundation aims to raise money, through active fundraising, that can be distributed to the community organizations and projects.

· The Brown Foundation aims to identify existing organizations and projects, within disadvantaged communities, whose work are preventing youth at risk from running to the streets as an option. These organizations and projects are chosen by the trustee of the Foundation, along with the amount and/or form of funding entrusted to the organization or project.

· The Brown Foundation aims to sign up different celebrities and people of note, in all different fields (e.g. T.V., Radio, Music, Sport, Academic, etc.), as ambassadors of the Foundation. These Ambassadors are responsible for representing and promoting the Foundation as often as possible.
