For those that don’t know, D Planet is a moderator on the AG Forums and a seasoned producer (check his biography here). He has produced tracks for numerous South African hip hop artists (Trusenz, Pro Kid, Konfab, Ben Sharpa, Middle Finga and Archetypes) and has done various projects in Europe. We recently had a discussion with him to talk about these projects, why he came to South Africa, his influences, the equipment and software he uses and the process he chooses when making music. We also have a lengthy discussion around the “Chickenhawk” song which was a response to Hype Magazine calling him out. Lastly he gives his opinion on South African hip hop. Check it out…

This week Miss Contro speaks to Mr John Robinson who is also known as Lil Sci. For those who don’t know she was in the big apple a few months ago and got to hook up the man himself. In this interview JR (of Scienz of Life and Sol Uprising) speaks about his album Leak Edition, working with MF Doom and Madlib, the album “One Day…Everything Changed” and with working on the new CL Smooth LP. Diggin Deep Productions presents an ill showcase of CPT’s hip hop talent. The Rhyme Project continues on Saturday 05 August 06 happening at Club Lepht (4 Buiten St, off Long St, formerly Black Sheep), beginning at 20:00. Featuring a dope MC line-up consisiting of Driemanskap, Ill-Literate-Skill, Writers Block & Ben Sharpa. On the 1s & 2s we got DJ Nastie Ed – c’mon what could be better than this? Do we need to say more? Oh yes of course, cover charge will be R20. The first Saturday of August, the 5th, at the BAT CENTRE, in the hall, the LIFE CHECK crew in association with the 2ON2 Bboy squad (Switch and his posse from Joburg) are combining forces to throw Durban’s biggest underground HipHop event for 2006. Four battles for Four elements. R20 registration fee lines you up for a shot at the main title, Durban champion and the accompanying prizes (with a chance to go to Cape Town for the SA HipHop Indaba as part of a Durban crew). R10 gets you in as a supporter. With performances and prizes as well as some straight real HipHop this Battle is a tribute to the real Durban HipHop heads keeping the movement in motion.

On 8 August it’s Women’s Day and we all know what will happen. Most people will just park off at home and pretend it’s a glorified Sunday. You can expect the government to erect a stage in a huge field somewhere and spout the same old platitudes about women’s rights while some vaguely popular artists are doing their thing in between. I am a women and I do not deny the fact that the government has done it’s bit for women. But I must admit that it’s all getting a bit boring. Needless to say I was on the look out for something exciting and when I found out I felt it was my civic duty to inform everyone. Read on for more info…

In March this year disaster struck at the Outrageous Records studio, the system had packed up and the highly anticipated debut album from one of Africa’s tightest MCs was gone. But the crisis ended up working in his favor, because as he got ready to record again spending his days updating rage.co.za and many a late night recording, he also hooked up with new musicians and vocalists to include on the album. “If I hadn’t lost the first material, then this CD would be nothing like it is now, I only kept one song from the original album, the intro!”. Sure he worked with Outrageous Records’ hip-hop group H20, soulstress Pebbles, genius producer Battlekat as well as Battlekat’s group Optical Illusion. But not only that, he also hooked up with the kind of artists who have never been heard on SA hip-hop albums before.

Zubz (the last letta) as he is known in the hip-hop circles is going to rock the Finland hip-hop heads with his golden mic and added bonus he is taking his band. The invitation for Zubz to perform in Finland is by a project called Young Africa 2006, which aims to raise awareness about the situation in South Africa, how the black youth are trying to achieve and develop their country post apartheid.

Sean Paul has just announced that he will join Mariah Carey on a North American concert tour hitting arenas across the country and Canada. This tour comes hard on the heels of Sean’s third album, The Trinity (VP/Atlantic) being certified RIAA platinum. This is Sean’s first national tour of this magnitude since the Roc The Mic Tour in 2003 and Mariah’s first in over three years. Sean is set to join “The Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, The Hits, The Tour” on August 7th in Tampa, FL and tour the nation and Canada with Mariah through September 9th in Auburn Hills, MI. Tickets for most dates go on sale Friday, June 2nd. Live Nation is producing the tour.
