14 July 2006 No Comment

The Faculty of Hip Hop was established for the promotion of positive education for the youth and in furtherance of this objective, is planning an annual film festival targeting high-school learners, to begin on the 14th of August 2006 and to be held over a period of four days. Although the 2006 pilot festival will be exclusively accessible to high schools in the Western Cape, it will tour nationally from 2007.

The festival will focus on the South African identity of hip-hop as well as its
impact on the youth, and will feature four locally produced films (three of
which were nominated for awards in prestigious film festivals internationally),
followed by discussions of the respective films on the days that each is
screened.

Featured films will be ‘Definition of Freedom’, ‘Mr. Devious’, ‘Hip-hop Wat
Skop’ and ‘Rhymes and Life’. The festival will also feature a special
screening of the Cannes-nominated documentary called ‘Ongeriewe’.

In addition to the films, a live hop hop showcase with DJ Azuhl , DJ Eazy as
well as the Crazy Hip Squad will perform live at the festival.

The venue is to be the Joseph Stone’s 500-seater auditorium, which has hosted a
number of arts-and-culture-related events with community and school
involvement.

Tickets for screenings are R10 each day and proceeds will go towards the Eon
Group as well as the Centre for Hip Hop Education that is based at the Joseph
Stone.

Target audience

Hip-hop is the language of the youth, currently outselling every other genre of
music. High school learners constitute the vast majority of South Africa’s
youth and will not only be attracted by a hip-hop centred festival, but also
benefit from the educationally-orientated discussions of the featured films.

High Schools interested to attend the Festival can contact the Eon Group at Tel:
021 637 1268 or Tyrone at 083 332 2785.
