The culture, that is Hip Hop, has evolved. The ever-growing barrier breaking art form has found its way into the theatre. With a very strong support base and interest from communities within the Arts sector, Artscape have opened their doors for the second consecutive year to embrace the Hip Hop Community. The event will display on a truly unrivalled platform, for the second year running, some of the best independent developing Hip Hop talent in South Africa and neighbouring countries. Judging by the huge success in terms of crowd attendance and media coverage of last year’s production, this professional theatre performance will continue to attract the South African Hip Hop community in a space previously thought of as inaccessible.

The MIC Show is a talent search concept that was born from the passion for technically and economically empowering young unreleased artists in Africa by giving them a free platform to launch their careers from. An event where they would perform then get instant feedback from the audience and judges. MARC (Musicians and Actors’ Resource Center, Botswana) under the directorship of Franklyn M. Moyo, C.E.O of Fresh Ideas, one of the sponsoring companies and the founder of both MARC and the MIC Show concept, started hosting the talent search in Gaborone, Botswana on a small scale on September 8 2005. MARC was launched in May 2005 with his Excellency Sir Joseph Huggins, the former United States Ambassador to Botswana as the officiating guest of honour. The MIC Show is actually a concept that was born from the auditions for the MIC movie. After failing to get satisfactory performance by those who were auditioning for the movie, Moyo thought of looking for characters through the use of a talent search event and the idea worked wonders. The MIC movie itself will be shot in December this year and released some time in April next year.

Time has come today for Gym Class Heroes. Rightly recognized as true pioneers of live hip-hop, the Geneva, NY-based band has won popular and critical acclaim for kicking out genre-busting jams that seamlessly meld rap, rock, R&B, and anything else that happens to strike the musically voracious outfit’s fancy. Now, with their new Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen release, “AS CRUEL AS SCHOOL CHILDREN,” Gym Class Heroes have stepped up their game on every level. Produced by S*A*M (aka Sam Hollander, hailed for his collaborations with Method Man, the Sounds, and Earth, Wind & Fire) and Sluggo (the alter-ego of renowned session bassist Dave Katz, known for his work with Roger Daltrey), with co-production from the band’s close mate, Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, songs like the witty MySpace anthem, “New Friend Request,” explode out of the speakers with a rollicking sonic irreverence ideally suited for the hazy days and hot nights of summer.

Their name only conjures recognition amongst the true purists but many are now wondering: Who are the LongShots? In an era where publicity stunts pass for skills, they infuse top-notch lyricism with classic New York City beats to create a sound reminiscent of golden age Hip-Hop with a fresh, modern twist. They speak on real-life urban narratives about ghetto survival, not exaggerated to satisfy the pop masses. The duo is currently working on their second album, The Jungle Book.
