It comes as no surprise that the multi-cultural and musically rich setting of the Bassline in Newtown has been chosen to host the first Johannesburg performance of Hip Hop and R&B singing sensation Lungelo. On April 28th he’ll be giving a special acoustic performance with his eight piece band and DJ on the same stage where legends such as Vusi Mahlasela, Moses Molelewka, and Abdulluah Ibrahim have performed. Lungelo has been making waves in Cape Town since his appearance in 2006 as a Coca Cola Popstars finalist. He was voted for nationally to perform with international superstars Snoop Doggy, Pharrel and Sean Paul, and was asked to later open for Kanye West two months later. His debut album followed in November, leading to a number three spot in the Musica Metro FM charts in March this year.

From the dusty streets of Gugulethu township, this beat maker, producer and performer draws his inspiration and fuses elements of daily township life with elements of Hip Hop, R&B and Raga sounds, to tell his story about where he’s from. Re-difining the meaning of these genres and adding a unique South African twist to it. After starting out as many musicians do playing in the church, he went on to be mentored by South African Jazz great Abdullah Ibrahim. Its Lungelo’s bold contemporary urban expression of the old and new of Mzansi cultural that makes his music unparalleled.

The Bassline offers Lungelo’s followers in Jozi their first opportunity to see him in the kind of setting that will do justice to his act, and get a taste of his blend of R&B/HipHop/Soul that he calls “Kasi-Soul”. While Metro FM listeners may be familiar with “Where I’m From”, a tribute to his Gugulethu roots, YFM listeners with the L.U.N.G.E.L.O track and MTV and Channel O viewers with the notorious “Dirty Girl” single, this is the opportunity to encounter and judge him on his whole performance.

The line-up for the evening includes his homeboy backing vocalists Kritsi and Jassidan and his regular backing turntablist, DJ Iggy. And with The Naked DJ featuring and Yaris revealing the winners of its national competition on the night, the evening should be something of an extravaganza.
