Kwaito artist Mandoza was back in the news for all the wrong reasons recently when he was involved in a horrific crash on Johannesburg’s N1 highway. Two people were killed instantly when the Daimler-Chrysler he was driving crashed into their VW Jetta.  He was on his way to the after-party for the Stars of Mzansi awards show. Two months later, he still has not been charged, although a culpable homicide case is being investigated. The families of the deceased want answers from the authorities. They claim that Mandoza is being protected because of his celebrity status, vital evidence has been compromised and the police are not doing enough to secure a conviction.   Mandoza is an award winning artist and regarded by many as one of the best local crossover artists with a slew of chart-topping hits like Nkhalakata and Godoba. He is a household name in South Africa and abroad. The star is regularly featured in the media, often for his illustrious achievements. But he has had his fair share of controversies. Mandoza was raised in Zola, Soweto where he was later linked to notorious car hijacking syndicates. He rose to prominence when he formed the musical group Chiskop, choosing kwaito music as an outlet for expression.

The troubled star’s run-ins with the law include a 2005 drunken driving charge of which he was later acquitted. He was also acquitted on fraud and assault charges in 2007.
