HIPHOP DE AFRIQUE
-by dj jumanne
African Hip Hop Festival in Benin
Last month in Cotonou, capital of Benin (West-Africa) the first ever African
Hip Hop festival took place. Groups from 10 different countries, and some 15
local Beninese crews came to perform for an audience of 5000 people, part of
whom came from outside the country.
In West-Africa, local hip hop has had some good exposure through the media,
eg sattelite music tv channel MCN Afrique, and through sales of
international companies, most notably EMI/Jat which distributes products of
acts such as RAS (Ivory Coast) and Positive Black Soul (Senegal). The latter
have toured extensively in the region and are true idols among the
Francophone youth and even in English speaking regions such as Ghana. It’s
probably true to say that in West-Africa, hip hop is crossing borders more
often than in the Eastern and Southern parts of the continent. With M-Net
(and even MCN Afrique) being available in more countries, there is a medium
which could serve as a promotional space for African hip hop. The Rockdown
Africa show toured some of these places and recorded the local rap. What
still lacks is a region-wide music industry. In fact, the whole Eastern
African market is regulated by Tanzanian cassette pirates who release mostly
foreign material. However they do have the duplication capacity and network
to make a success out of the release of a local rapper.
The African Hip Hop festival united West-African rap groups from the
different language zones, and many different styles. Relatively new acts
such as Les Ecrocs (Mali) came up with a unique presentation, fusing
American inspired flows with traditional music and dance and wearing local
dress. The 2nd night of the 3-day festival was the ‘international night’
where the foreign acts appeared on stage. The list reads like a ‘who’s who’
in West African hip hop, including old school heads Pee Froiss (Senegal),
Reggie Rockstone (Ghana) and Remedies (Nigeria). A third night had some
serious dj showcases including Gee Bass from Pee Froiss, and Rab who was
with Reggie Rockstone. According to the latter, the festival was a good
opportunity for hip hop artists to learn about each other’s work and to do
some serious networking. Several crews went into the studio together to
record new material, thus crossing the ever-existent French/English
barriers. The event had been financed completely by one guy, a Beninese
promoter who even paid for an act to come out of Europe. Next year should be
bigger still, and if you wondered ‘where is Eastern and Southern Africa in
this’, even that is being taken care of.

ELEMENTS I’M AMONG
– by KRS ONE
for all you “normal” people who always thought hiphop was just about
“Tupac” (Tyrone Apollis jou aahol)and all that other shit.. FUNDA JOE.
After doing the research and consulting with Hip Hop’s
founders as well as surveying the average fan, the definition of Hip Hop
has expanded from 4 to 9 main components.
Traditionally people have come to define Hip Hop culture as GRAFFITI,
BREAKDANCING, EMCEEING [rap] and DEEJAYING..
..those 4 components alone leave the culture incomplete. They don’t
fully explain the reason that Hip Hop has lasted so long and continues
to grow. Most people claim that Hip Hop is a way of life and as result
there’s a lifestyle accompanying it.. in both my speech and book I
brought forth those additional components.
The first is Beatboxing, the art of seeing the body as an instrument.
It means to express yourself in the face of nothing and it traces its
roots back to Africa.
Street Fashion and Street Language are obvious.
These two components change with the times.
Street Knowledge is the 8th component and it breaks down to the study of
universal law. It’s the set of guidelines you can’t escape in life.
From a practical standpoint, its basic common sense and accumalated wisdom
of inner city families. It’s the set of techniques that are used to survive
and function soundly when all mainstream ideas have failed.
The final component is Street Entreprenueralism. This is a trade.
It’s people trying to make a dollar out of 15 cents.. It’s creating off
each other. It’s the hustle we all deal with..
These components have always and continue to be defining and driving forces
within Hip Hop. It is important to understand that Hip Hop is always
evolving.
It navigates through the environment that is before it. It is self
transformation and the pursuit of self expression. As we head on into
the new Millenneum, it is important that we recognize that we are the
culture
of Hip Hop. In short I AM HIP HOP and Hip Hop is where ever you
go.. If you look at it from a religious or spiritual perspective,
the saying would be; Don’t read the word of God, Be the word of God..

EISHHHH JOE!
A small boy asks his Dad, What is politics?”
Dad says, “Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I’m the breadwinner
of the family, so let’s call me Capitalism. Your Mom, she’s the
administrator of the money, so we’ll call her the Government.
We’re here to take care of your needs, so we’ll call you the People.
The nanny, we’ll consider her the Working Class. And your baby brother,
we’ll call him the Future. Now, think about that and see if that makes
sense.”
So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said.
Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to
check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper.
So the little boy goes to his parents’ room and finds his mother sound
asleep.
Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny’s room. Finding the door
locked,
he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny.
He gets up and goes back to bed.
The next morning, the little boy says to his father, “Dad, I think I
understand the concept of politics now.” The father says,
“Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all
about.”
The little boy replies, “Well, while Capitalism is screwing the Working
Class,
the Government is sound asleep, the People are being ignored ,and the Future
is in Deep Shit.”
