It’s always exciting to discover new authors, especially when they have something to say. So, my curiosity peaked when I came across Excursions In My Mind, by Nana Awere Damoah. A newly-published author, Nana describes his book as “bite-sized essays about . . . family, schooling, reflections on key issues: self-help, leadership, love for parents, nature of friendship, and partnership with Jesus.” Intrigued, […]
Thousands of fans, friends and family, accompanied by the high profile South African society, gathered in Johannesburg where Mama Miriam Makeba was laid to rest this past weekend.
There is no doubt that one of biggest African highlights musically this year has been Ms Estelle, breaking through the industry with her single “American Boy” featuring Grammy award soldier, Kanye West. Ever since the hit single, Estelle has showed no signs of stopping but continuing to make hits like “You are” and “Come On Over” featuring a certain sensuous crooner by the name of John Legend.

Amidst little fanfare, the sixth edition of the CAF African Women’s Championship kicked off this past weekend in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. Backed by a ferocious home support, Equatorial Guinea pulled off what must surely be the upset of the tournament so far, by beating perennial powerhouse, Cameroon 1-0. In the other Group A match, Mali slumped to a 0-1 defeat against Congo.
It was hardly a surprise to hear that Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association for throwing a coin back into the crowd. Drogba hurled a coin into a section of Burnley supporters following his goal in Chelsea’s shock Carling Cup defeat at Stamford Bridge lat week Wednesday. He has until Monday evening to respond, with a hearing planned for Tuesday. In addition, Drogba, 30, made a single-finger gesture before throwing the coin back following his 27th-minute goal, but there have been no reports of any spectators being injured.
No that’s not the name of another reality TV series but a statement on how talented the contestants of the Project Fame West Africa are. The remaining 7 students in the academy got the chance last weekend to perform their own compositions and they were pretty good. With the assistance of their music director, Ben Ogbeiwi and a visit by J. T Taylor of Kool and the Gang fame to the academy, the students were in high spirits to prove their worth to all of West Africa and the world.
After last week’s debacle that is the FIFA monthly rankings–how Israel is 15th and African champions Egypt remain in the 22nd position is beyond me–we turned our attention back to more local matters as Egypt’s Al Ahly won the CAF African Champions League for a record sixth time on Sunday after beating Coton Sport of Cameroon 4-2 on aggregate.
This weekend was full of the usual parties and celebrity sightings. There were also celebrities who were using their fame to make a difference for others.
Charlize Theron was named a U.N. Messenger of Peace at a U.N. Messenger of Peace induction ceremony. Iman looked fabulous when she showed up at the Save A Child charity event and Wale helped T.I. celebrate his new fashion line. » Read more…
The excitement continues to build on the Road to the MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain (MAMA). Last week The Game and a line-up of MAMA nominees gave performances that had fans going crazy in Kinshaha. After hours spent just trying to get clearance from customs to enter the city, I’m told that The Game gave it everything he had and the crowed went wild shouting, “The Game, The Game, we love The Game”.
The Game performed to full house Saturday night. Concert goers were up on the dance floor, waving their hands, and singing along to hit after hit.
The Compton rapper — born Jayceon Taylor — gave a stellar performance at the Bomas of Kenya, Nairobi on Saturday night. Let me just put it out there to you, I didn’t know what to expect. I walked away impressed. » Read more…
