Cape Town based Afrikaans Hip Hop group Kallitz have won the 2005 SABC 2 GMT Music Award for ‘Best R&B Hip Hop Album’ with their debut release ‘die ding ruk mal’. The award was held in the Circus Maximus at Ceasars in Johannesburg. Kallitz were also performing at the event...
The SABC 2 GMT Music Award is in its third year and recognises Afrikaans artists. The category ‘Best R&B Hip Hop Album’ was introduced for the first time in 2005 and drew entries from newcomers Kallitz and Jitsfinger, as well as from established Hip Hop band Brasse Vannie Kaap. It was Kallitz however who were able to convince the panel of judges that their debut offering ‘die ding ruk mal’ is the number one Afrikaans Hip Hop album, and they collected the award to loud cheers from the crowd. Kallitz member Boere comments: “Just to have been nominated for this prestigious award and having been invited to perform already meant a lot for us, but winning the award is just mal and will open a lot of doors for us.” Kallitz producer and band member Dokter adds: “Seeing that our album was only released eight months ago, and it being our first, we are very happy and proud to have won the award.” The third Kallitz member Skelm was not available for comment.
