The plot revolves around Hellboy (Ron Perlman), a young demon that was summoned by Gregori Rasputin for the Third Reich during World War 2. He was meant to be used as the ultimate weapon to turn the tide of the war, but was captured by the Allies and raised by Professor Broom (John Hurt). Sixty years have passed since the war and Hellboy is at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence working as an operative under the tutelage of his father, Professor Broom. The other members of the team include, John T. Meyers, an FBI agent, Liz Sherman, a pyrokinetic and Abe Sapian, an aquatic humanoid who is a telepath. Rasputin returns after being resurrected by his lover to complete his mission of bringing the apocalypse.

The film is packed with excellent special effects, no, very cool special effects. The characters are interesting as well and are not hidden away by the special effects. It has tense thrilling moments, especially when the monsters come out to play. It also has some humour as well, such as when Hellboy spies on Liz and John’s date or when Hellboy resurrects a Russian corpse in a graveyard to get directions, the corpse is funny for a dead guy. The action scenes are cool, packed with gunplay, demons, explosions and humour.

HELLBOY isn’t the most amazing action movie on the market and the ending is anti-climatic. That said it’s not a waste of time or money to make an effort to go watch it. Something to watch when in the mood to be entertained.
