A successful cocaine dealer (Daniel Craig) who is planning an early retirement is forced back into business by his boss with a request he can’t refuse and then things spiral out of control.
LAYER CAKE is a typical British crime movie, which means it is totally different from American crime movies, which are considered the norm. British crime movies are dark, off centre and the accents and slang can be humorous at times. LAYER CAKE seems to be pegged as an art house movie release, which is strange because it has so much commercial appeal. Though the slang can be a bit confusing to the uninitiated for example: “There are so many villains who ‘ave a lot of bottle” if you don’t know what that sentence meant then you might be confused by some of the dialogue. It might help if you watch THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY, another British crime movie though it does have subtitled translations of the slang. The movie is built on twists and turns while the plot is slowly revealed until the climax. There is plenty of dark humour to keep the keen crime movie buff interested and it’s slick, really slick.
