We're constantly confronted with provocative images in an attempt to get us to react. But when a misguided attempt to be provocative fails and is simply offensive, shouldn't it be abandoned?

The SRC Election Campaign is a series of posters that have the potential to destroy much of the the progress towards true diversity and transformation already achieved at the University of Stellenbosch.

One wonders how blatantly derogatory images are viewed as suitable to encourage students to vote in the upcoming SRC elections, an event meant to unite students . Equating women with "dogs" or "bucks" as in the "Do what you're told" and "Bosbokkies" image; or gay students as "the pienk gevaar" in that particular representation, or worse still, black students as the "swaart gevaar" or objects of condescension in the "Hug a black friend" poster, while suggestive of contemporary prejudice are simply derogatory.

While the objective may not have been to cause insult, this is what is happening, and the current organisational response of: "but other people don't mind," or "most people have reacted well" is not satisfactory.
