RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY INFO SESSION 2006 The journey is set to begin again. In 2006 and in its 9th year the Red Bull Music Academy is going to Melbourne, Australia. Not just any old music event, the Academy is a school of beats, rhymes and life. It’s where music delectation is combined with positive education. The program yields once-in-a-lifetime opportunities – such as the chance to go back down memory lane with music’s most prized contributors, to share futuristic studio perspectives or capture a timeless groove in a late night jam session. The Academy is a place where self-knowledge is prized above pride, where newbies can hold their heads high as the barriers come down. The beneficial effect isn’t limited to the participants. Virtually all who step through the Academy’s doors find inspiration to – in the words of Big Daddy Kane – "take flight and ignite to a brand new height". With the application for this years academy having just begun, we are hosting a series of Info Sessions around South Africa. These are to give you an insight to what a day in the life of the RBMA is all about. This year we are lucky enough to have a full line-up with an international flair. Brendon Gillian aka Ectomorph (check out his Bio below) arrives on our shores this week and will be blowing us way with the inside scoop on the Detroit scene... Other speakers will be G-Force in Cape Town and The Real Estate Agents in Johannesburg and in Durban. Both G and TREA are SA music heavyweights who have pioneered the dancefloor culture. All in all, it bodes for an action packed session which any musician / producer / DJ should not miss out on. Those who have applied previously but have yet to be invited are certainly encouraged to give it another shot. As quite a few second- or third-time applicants have learned, perseverance can most definitely pay off. Check out www.redbull.co.za for more info on your local / regional RBMA contacts; otherwise for the full story check www.redbullmusicacademy.com RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY INFO SESSION 2006 BMG of Ectomorph (Interdimensional Transmissions) IT HQ Detroit I.T. label head BMG has been pivotal in the re-emergence of Electro, from his early trend-defining records as Ectomorph to his latest innovations and discoveries released through his own Interdimensional Transmission label and many other distinguished labels (including Planet E, Ersatz Audio, Rephlex, Gigolo, and Ghostly.) Beyond Ectomorph, his label was behind the release of I-F's "Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass" - a huge hit with influential DJs such as Sven Vaeth and Dave Clarke, regarded as the tune that put Electro back on everyone's playlist. Prepare for a sonic journey through the history of Detroit's music as well as discussing his live laptop DJ sets that fuse many styles (electro, techno, house, disco, italo, synth, acid, rock, etc), providing a seductive context for cutting edge dance music with energy reminiscent of 80's Detroit Radio Mix shows. With finesse and a skilled misuse of available (ableton) software, BMG reinvents the old and remixes the new into a solid new sound blending up to ten sound sources at a time. The Real Estate Agents For those not up to date on the cutting edge of South African originality, The Real Estate Agents is the dynamic pairing of lab kids on distortion Sibot and Markus Wormstorm. Blending samplers, turntables, effects pads and a laptop, the Agents live is a show second to none. They have 2 joint releases on African Dope Records as well as individual releases on Sound Ink (New York) and Compost (Germany). Join The Real Estate Agents as they deconstruct their live shows and give tips on their crunching sound production. G-Force One of South Africa's true pioneers of underground dance culture, has been pushing boundaries for over 20 years and has always remained at the cutting edge. After wining the Technics SA Battle of the DJ's in 1992 G-force has gone from strength to strength promoting and co-ordinating the first large-scale raves, such as Piccadilly and the Joburg Fort party, as well as taking up post as the head DJ at the monumental 4th World where his legendary 10 hour sets would forever change the face of underground dance music down south. G-Force has subsequently been a permanent fixture in credible clubs and larger dance events both here and abroad, as well as airing his skills on various radio stations. Over the last two decades G-Force has led the local movement by example, consistently delivering the deepest and freshest beats and the most credible overseas talent, join us as we discuss the records that shaped his journey and those that continue to drive him.
