Our PE correspondent spoke to Bukue One, manager of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Skater and Emcee. Peep this EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW.
Well I'm a start of this interview by asking you to introduce yourself to the south african hip hop community? What up family! My name is Bukue One the skateboarding, graff writin, strike bowlin lyricist. How long you into emceeing and who would you say was your biggest influences when you grew up? I've been emceeing playfully since like 92 but seriously since 96 biggest influences, Del and the Hieroglyphics, Aceyalone, Special Ed, Poor Righteous Teachers, Masta Ace. So you from Oakland right? Damn every black person from Oaktown I been in contact is on this heavy revolutionary tip whats the hip hop scene like in Oaktown? Hip Hop in Oakland is a training ground. It's where we build our skillz, then we go out to the rest of the world and share the arts and teachings. There isn't a huge scene as far as shows and events, that happens more in San Francisco (20 minutes away) we just build and mastermind here. Ok the name Bukue One hit me up on that is that a tag name or just some shit that popped up in the dome? I used to write Nation, then around early 91 I just started hearing "Bukue this" and "Bukue that", like for example my mom's friend who's a rasta would say "man mi bretheren had Bukue ganja inna di house". I just started hearing the word used a lot, so I asked him one day what it meant and we told me it was like slang for "a lot" or "a massive amount" . So it just felt right, since 91 I've been Bukue One or Infinite one so to speak. You see, I've been skateboarding since 1997, doing graffiti since 1991 and rappin since 1996, so rappin is my newest element. What's the affiliation with the Hieroglyphics camp cos I have been a mad fan of Del them since the early beginnings? I grew up listening to them and I knew a couple of them from around town.. I used to distribute Del tapes for them on the streets and at shows in 1997.. in 2000 I went on tour with Del to help tour manage. We kept in touch through the years and in 2002 Del and his old manager seperated and I stepped in to manage Del. Hey man whats up with the skateboarding thing me being a skater myself started like in 1992 when my skateboarding hero was Ray Barbee (plus for yall that don't know skateboarding is a sub element of this hip hop art) Skateboard for me is the cousin of hiphop, alot of deejays, rappers, dj's, bboys, used to skate, I just kept skating, never stopped, I switch focuses to graff and now to rappin and business. I'm trying to be that person I would have wanted to hang out with when I was growin up. The ultimate Big Kid! I was hitting your site up the other day http://www.bukueone.com and saw that you have some mp3's available to be downloaded what you think of this whole internet revolution that's taking place? I love the internet, email and all that goodness. Independant artist needs free press, free promotion! Through the internet we get it world wide! Nothin bad to say about it.. I do think internet freestyle battles are a bit silly though. I'm a ask you some shit in afrikaans you translate it for me "rook jy baie dagga"! It means "Yo dat's that shit!" Yeah any album out yet or is it still in the making? I have a few independant cd's I've released, and my official Lp will be out sometime late summer this year. It will be called "Rebirth" stay tuned! When can we expect Bakue One to hit the South African audience? Whenever Bukue gets a promoter or folks who wanna bring me out! Any last words for the youth of South Africa, you know we got this big fight against the aids virus ya'll should hook a hip hop tour to south africa? Stay focus, optimistic and positive! We are willing to come out and rock for y'all, we just need promoters and shows! One Bukue One www.bukueone.com |
