Tlokwe Sehume is one of South Africa’s most diverse African contemporary and classical musicians. As well as being a visual artist, Tlokwe has mastered the art of songwriting, song composition, guitar, mbira, mvet, flute, percussion and vocals. Africas Gateway caught up with him and spoke to him about his latest album.
First of all I'd like to congratulate you on an excellent album. Can you define your music for those who don't know? My music can be classified as contemporary-cum-classical African music How long did it take for you to record this album and how is the album doing at the moment? This is a re-release of an album I did in 1995 under the same title, Naga Ya Fsa. I recorded three new tracks for the new album. I believe it is doing well as it was only released in February. Are you touring at the moment and if so, when and where? At the moment I am not touring buty I will hopefully be doing an album launch some time soon. In your album you highlight a lot of social issues which for me made this album even more enjoyable. Do these words come from personal experience or observation? A combination of experiences both personal and impersonal - and observation.. In your spare time what do you like doing? Reading When can we expect the next album? About February 2002 What are your thoughts on kwaito music? It needs to develop from where it is and become educational. Do you plan on going overseas to try the market there? If I have it my way then yes Thank you for taking the time to talk to us, do you have any last words? South African musicians and artists need to start learning to tackle issues and problems head on and stop just being entertainers. |
