We interview Johannesburg based Hip Hop crew The Skwatta Camp

So tell us exactly, who is who in Skwatta Kamp?

Shugasmakz, Flabba, Sip, Initial M, Nemesis, Infa, Geddon, Boss and Slick.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you cats used to chill with the Unreleased Records crew?

Not really, we all know one another but we've never really chilled together.

You got a new album that just got released, Skwatta Kampain, and I'm dying to hear it. Can you break down the album into particles?

Basically, we all got a chance to say what we want. The album has songs on reality (day to day life), skills, Hip Hop, the party scene, travelling, love and of course -
Us!. The album is us!

From what I can tell, ya'll on the lyrical tip, and in that case there must have been battles. Tell us which were your best ones.

The best battle had to be Slick against Snazzy D, it was nothing personal. Aside from that there have been other battles, it's just that people no longer battle you to sharpen their skills, they battle to prove a point, it's no
longer just for fun. Things get personal.

Who did the production on the album?

The Shack Ark-E-Tekts (Infa, Slick and Shuga), but Infat did most of the work on this album.

What would you say the purpose is of this album?

To let people know that we here, as Skwatta Kamp and as the Hip Hop community, to let the world know that we take ourselves and our work seriously, to let the CEO's of big recording companies know that we can do it, even without
their help. The album is an introduction to many things still to come.

When it comes to local Hip Hop who do you think got skills?

Too many people, e.g. Mythical Thoughts, Basemental Platform, Perm, Cyclone Wizards, Hidden Force, Rashid, Spex, Hoodlum, Mizchif,
Amu, Max Normal...and a whole lot of other people, I've only mentioned emcees from Jo-burg, we can't forget the Cape, Durbs, Vaal and the rest
of South Africa.

What are we gonna do about the wack emcees?

At one stage or another we were all wack emcces, but if you gonna go out in public and do some stupid things
in the name of Hip Hop - you deserve to get smacked! The greater forces of life will deal with you.

Some people have referred to ya'll as the Wu Tang of South Africa. How do you feel about that?

Thanks for the comparison, but at the end of the day, we just good old Skwatta - still hustling.

Are we going to see solo releases in the future from each member?

Of course! Infa's album is next, it's already recorded, we just waiting for Skwatta as a group to get all the shine it can get first.
