Soulviet Union gets interviewed by Africas Gateway.
Your album "S.I.N.", is this a compilation album and if so, can we expect to see a solo album from each member?
Jame: S.I.N. isn't a compilaton album. The word union in our name means exactly that--union. We're together, there's no separation of any kind. As for solos, right now we have to focus on the group. If down the line the demand for a solo from any one of us is there, then a solo is definately a possiblty. However, I see any solo album as a branch off of the group. There wouldn't be a break up. Don Heroic: No it is not a comp. Without numbers theres know Union,If theres know Union theres know strength. Right now the focuse is on establishing S.U 1st then after if theres a strong demand for solo albums bets believe there will be solos droppin.
We were impressed with a lot of the tracks and can clearly see that there is a dose of maturity shining through on the songs. How is the album doing and are there any videos planned?
Jame: It's doing well. We have crazy promo out and a strong following. And trust me, videos are definitely in the future. Iz-Real: Thank you the album is doing well considering we're just hittin the scene. Don Heroic: When we express ourselves through our music its a true reflection of how and who we are know matter what type of tracks we do!! gritty, commericial, mental, funked out or whatever the listener will be able to understand, vibe, bounce, respect, relate per track 1 way or the other if not them all. I feel thats why S.I.N the album is doing well. Inshallah videos will follow. Life: Maturity comez wit time and we been in this for awhile now. Even before we met each other. It seemz each road in our lives led to this intersection and we all bumped headz and matured together.
What artists do you think are really dope at the moment?
Jame: Right now I think Jay-Z is obviously still doin it. I gotta go underground and put it all on Tragedy though. He's been doin it for a while with no real recognition. I think Eve is gonna come even better on the new album too. Life: I like 1st n foremost: Jay- z, L.O.X. Iz-Real: There are alot of artist charting and ones thats not charting thats hot so if I had to choose I couldn't. Manetane: I think Jay-z is hot. Don Heroic: Being a musician I Rate all musicians the same.
Who influenced you early in your lives?
Jame: My family number one. But as for music Run-DMC, 3rd Bass, Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane, all the pioneers. Iz-Real: I was influenced by G-Rap, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-1, and Rakim. Life: Big Daddy Kane and niggas around the way. Manetane: Fam and the struggle. Don Heroic: If I was asked this question back then my answer would be different back then from right now reason being now I'm more observant and aware of my surroundings. Everything then till now all had and still have something to do with a song and dance which influenced me. You know?
Anybody in particular you'd like to work with in the future and/or are you working with other people at the moment?
Jame: I'd love to work with everyone from Redman to Jadakiss to Eminem. I'd like to get outside of hip-hop too and get with some hard rock dudes. Life: I'd like to work with any Def Jam/Roc-a-Fella artist or on the underground side of thingz it would have to be L.G ( Left Gunnz) and Steve Stone from dirty Jerz. Don Heroic: In a way I'm with it to work with anyone willing to work wit me. Manetane and Iz-Real say the same.
What are your views on Africa and do you see yourself coming to South Africa soon?
Jame: This music has really branched out internationally and I think Africa is one spot where hip-hop will grow even more. Hell yeah I wanna come to South Africa, get me out of this damn snow!! Nah, but I'd love to come and check it out, do some shows and all that. Iz-Real: Africa is home whether I'm going to perform or visit I plan to make it there. Don Heroic: Beside the news, reading books or interviews giving by artist or people who visited Africa its not to much fact I can speak on until I visit Africa myself.Inshallah we'll be there. Manetane: I view Africa as the orgin of music which I believe to be cultural foundation to everything in performing arts.If God willing I would love to visit and Understand the South African social structure. Life: I Agree with Heroic.
From what we can see from the album, the music, the production, the lyrics, the artwork etc. I can say for a fact that you guys are gonna blow up big time in the near future. The third eye can see this and the third ear can hear this too. What are your thoughts on this?
Jame: I think, not being cocky or arrogant, but I think we got it to blow. We're comin dfferent and people are gonna feel that. They're gonna feel that switch. You can only bling-bling for so long. We got relatable topics too, so instead of watching videos with mansions, diamonds and 40 cars and wondering what its like to have that, we give you something you can feel right then and there. Life: Thats what we intended to do,you know? We got something for everybody. Iz-Real: Thank you.Hopefully we'll get a chance to be heard worldwide. Our message and the messages in our songs is fruitful in many ways. Don Heroic: Good looking on the kind words with supporters you and intelligent planning S.U. plan wont fail. Manetane: Agrees and thank you.
What are your thoughts on the different aspects of hip hop. Are any of you actively involved with b-boying and writing?
Jame: I feel that hip-hop has grown so much. It used to be this sub-culture that people didn't really understand, but now you got every race and background participating in it. Iz-Real: Hip Hop is expression and its expanding as time moves on. Life: Hip Hop is a way of life not JUST music. I live it all. Manetane: I feel that music is diversified and expressed by different point of views. Thats good because its different ways to reach different audiences worldwide. Don Heroic: I agree with what everybody else said. Right now we're not actively involved but we support, respect and relate to the creativity artist put into B-Boying, Writing or whatever the artist profession.
Is there any particular message you would like to convey with your music?
Jame: Realness. No synthetic bullshit. Nothing was manufactured, nothing was written for someone else. Everything we do is for us and comes from our hearts. We want people to understand that you can be you and be respected. Iz-Real: It would have to be follow your dreams and dont let no one stand in between. Life: Yeah, Take it AS MUSIC! You can do it if you try. Don Heroic: Yeah, Whatever tracks we do whether it be hip hop mixed with R&B, Jazz, Rock, Expiremental Electronics, Funk or whatever!!! Thats how we VIBE. Manetane: Our vibe is UNIVERSAL.
Have any of you been involved with a battle, and if so, tell us about your most memorable one.
Jame: I never really battled that much but I have had some moments. These guys were at my job and I was spittin somethin and they were mockin me and shit. So I told em let's go. Luckily they all sucked and they felt like jackasses. Life: NO BATTLEZ, just hatin, but that comes wit the territory. Iz-Real: No I'm not into battlin, If I could make a living off it cool. Don Heroic: I'm wit Iz on that so is Manetane.
Okay thats all I got, after this I'm going to listen to your album again, but in the meantime do you have any last words.
Iz-Real: I want to thank you and everyone in Africa for listening and supporting us. GOD BLESS. Manetane: Thanks for showing interest in us and having belief that WE shall rise. Peace. Life: Same answer as us. Don Heroic: Thank you and everyone in Africa for your unconditional support. Also understanding S.U.
