Playboy W recently dropped his album "Tha Cold Part" and has recorded with B-Legit, Ray Luv, Snoop, Mac Dre, E40 plus a whole lot more. We got in touch to find out more...
Playbow W, what's up? Can you start off by telling us how old you are, where you from and where you at? GOD 1st. I'm the same age as 2 Pac, born an raised in (The North Bay) Santa Rosa, California the same place 2 Pac originated from, also Ray Luv an Dj Dize which all three were in a rap group called "STRIKLY DOPE" the first rap group 2 Pac was ever in. We all use to kick it, sell dope, an whatever else we had to do ta get our hustle on, so Pac came to my homies alot "The Coke Dealer" to recoup. Two yearz ago I decided to increase my budget an my game so I came to Las Vegas, Nevada where Dj Dize and other close folkz were. You've recently released your album "Tha Cold Part". How is the album doing? The album is doing a bang up job reaching folkz just like Gateway.com, I'm feeling really blessed at the moment, its only been a couple months since the release an its already a best seller in my area. But it hasn't went gold yet. I see you have a good range of featured artists. You've got B-Legit, Ray Luv, Snoop Dogg, Ma c Dre, E40 plus a whole lot more. Can you tell us your relationship with these artists and who were the tightest to work with? What can you tell us about these artists that nobody knows about? Thankz, well everyone except Snoop is from the (707) so we all raised up together, an I would have to say Mac Dre is the tightest to work with he's more original then any artist I've ever came across, an he's also hilarious as well. I can't tell you anything about these artists that nobody knows, cuz they my folkz an Playboy Dubb don't gossip. lol How long have you been in the game and what influenced you to get in? I've been rappin since 1989 when Ray Luv released "Who Could Be Trusted". I have alwayz loved music, but when WHODINI, RUN DMC, BEASTIE BOYS, LL COOL J. an more changed the game from breakin an poppin to rappin thats when I was influenced. What was it like for you growing up? Funny you ask, I was poor an on welfare with my mom, starving, freezing, an selling marijuana at the age of 10, we lived in every ghetto in my town, I saw people murdered, robbed, beat, stabbed, an shot by the age of 12, then at 13 my Mom flipped out an I was forced to leave my home an my hood, Valley Oak apts. on West Steele Lane. I have been on my own every since then hustling to get here, an I ain't leaving the game ever. I could go on but lets just say growing up waz deadly. Are there any videos out for this album? Nawt yet! Do you tour and if so where have you toured and what are your favourite tracks to perform? Yes, the west coast, I like to perform Medicinal Smoke, Tha Cold Part, an Saturated. I see you got K Lou and Dize to produce for you, what is it that you look for in a beat? A different sound or feel usually, but mostly the tempo an the beats per minute. Tell us about Lap Dance Cee Deez. How did that label start and what other releases come from that label? I started LAP DANCE 2 years ago, in January 2004, I'm releasing my artist Lucky 7's album called "Who Believes In Luck" then in May 2004 I'm releasing my double CD called "ALL PURPOSE" an more....... Have you ever come close to death? Yes more than I can count, I've been jumped, stabbed, and shot at many of times, I flew through a windshield once an had 300 stitches to sew my face an neck back together. I come close to death almost every day. Your lyrics are very pimpish, am I right in assuming that you like the twat and if so have you been selling it on the streets? What kind of question is that lol, Of'course I like twat, but I'm not a pimp, I'm a Playa, pimps sell prostitution, players like myself recruit exotic dancers an place them in strip clubs legally, an that's were I got the name for my label LAP DANCE an that's where LAP DANCE gets its cash, from lap dances. So what would you like to have achieved when you turn 40? Platinum sales Right now who are you feeling in terms of rappers out there? Ludacris And producers? My producer K-Lou, Dr. Dre, Swiss Beats, an Timberland. Tell us something that nobody knows about you? I'm a thugged out Italian, that kicks out police car windows, resist's arrest an threatens police officer's lives. I'm a tell you, the track I like is "Executives", the hook is nice, is that the one that get's the most response? Yeah "Executives" was #2 on the countdown for 3 months in the bay, while 50 cent was #1 with "In Da Club", then "Who Would You Bring Back was in the top 10 for about 4 months. How would you classify your music? I would have to classify "THA COLD PART" as one of the all time great rap albums, I don't want to be conceited, but most CD's nowdays only have a couple good songs, "THA COLD PART" you can drop in your car stereo an play the whole way through, itz major league status boss. As an artist do you feel that you have a responsibility towards the young kids who might be listening to your music? I don't feel responsible, but the main reason I make music is for GOD, the kids an folks going through all the drama an pain I went through. Music saved me from suicide, prison, murder, an death, so if I can give back and help save one person's life then everything I believe in is real. Does radio out there support rap? Yes absolutely, the only bad thing is, its a political issue nowadays an most stations want to get paid under the table for spinning your songs, unless its your home town, then they'll usually show a local artist love if their material is quality or if they get alot of requests. Who are the hottest artists in your neighbourhood right now? E-40 an yourz truly the PLAYBOY. Another one I'm feeling is "Who Would You Bring Back"? That's a nice beat. What are your favourite beats on the album? The title track "THA COLD PART" definitely. What do you like to eat? Lobster with melted butter. What makes you drunk? Nothing I don't drink. So if people wanna learn more about you and get to hear the record or buy it where can they go? In the USA its in stores everywhere, overseas you can order online just do a search on PLAYBOY W. "THA COLD PART". Thanks for talking to us down here in South Africa, any last words and shout outs? Yeah!
