The City of Cape Town is buzzing with the excitement of the festive season and what better way to celebrate our unity and freedom than with music. The City leads the festivities with a free concert in the Company Gardens on 16th December, an opportunity for Cape Town and its visitors to join the nation in celebrating Reconciliation Day with an exciting line-up of artists such as Brasse Vannie Kaap, Letta Mbuli, Freshly Ground and afro jazz group Inkhoekeli.
The theme of the concert, “A City United” lauds the commitment of the people of Cape Town towards creating a City that embraces its diversity in works towards building common ground. “Ten years of democracy has been a rewarding road and Cape Town has risen to the challenge of making the City work for all its residents, says Nomaindia Mfeketo, Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town. The concert in the Gardens is an annual event, free to all of Cape Town, and it promises to provide entertainment with a true South African flavour, in keeping with the significance of the day. Letta Mbuli, a true ‘mother’ of jazz, has sung to both South African and international audiences for over 20 years and her soulful voice is sure to let the spirit of reconciliation shine through. Two jazz greats, the Cape’s inimitable brother duo, Errol and Alvin Dyers, will bring their smooth jazzy sounds to life. Another outfit set to take the celebrations to foot-tapping festive heights with its Cape Town-flavoured Christmas songs, is the Reconciliation Day Ensemble, a ten piece big band lead by Cape Town based composer, arranger and pianist, Camillo Lombard – joined by a choir and a number of popular guest artists. Other thrilling acts are ‘Brasse Vannie Kaap’, one of the Cape’s leading hip-hop groups and ‘Tucan Tucan’ a vibrant band offering a blend of traditional African sounds with a jazzy salsa slant. More exciting performances from leading South African musicians complete the jazzy line-up. It’s about entertainment for the entire family and a number of fun-filled activities are planned for children.
