Let me illustrate a few examples. In many horror movies the first person to die was usually black , it happened so often that it became the running gag in SCARY MOVIE by the Wayans brothers with the memorable scene where one of the black characters says "Don't leave me alone they always kill the black people first" after which all the white characters abandon the black ones. Minorities were being discriminated against when these horror movies came out. Non-virgins were also discriminated against as well; everyone except the virgins usually died in most horror movies. They are supposed to be individuals who lack morality by having sex outside of marriage. 

In JASON X there is a scene where Jason is being taunted by holograms of topless teenagers who say how much they love premarital sex, which leads to Jason attacking them. He fails to kill them because they are holograms but he doesn't know that. That scene alone makes the movie worthwhile. 

Homosexuals also usually get killed off e.g. THE BRIDE OF CHUCKIE with the gay character getting hit by a speeding truck and his remains splattering on the survivors. Horror movies indicate who the outcasts of society are and what they deserve. So if you're, black, enjoy sex and gay then you'll be the first one to get it in a horror movie. That's why Shawn Wayans played a black homosexual who was a sexual freak in SCARY MOVIE. That movie is genius but intellectual snobs trash it because they don't get the underlying social parodies. The discrimination list goes on but there has been a change in who survives in horror movies of late. 

In DUSK TILL DAWN being pure of heart didn't matter but being evil still got you killed. The preacher character played by Harvey Keitel and the sexual predator played by Quentin Tarantino get killed whereas the wise/cynical character played by George Clooney and the virgin played by Juliet Lewis survive. 

This premise is also illustrated in PITCH BLACK. It should be noted that horror has evolved as a genre, namely it has merged with many other genres such as sci -fi e.g. PITCH BLACK, EVENT HORIZON, JASON X etc. Back to PITCH BLACK, the survivors are a WISE criminal, a FAITHFUL imam and an INNOCENT girl in disguise as a boy; the casualties are a drug addict cop, a brave pilot and a list of dead sods that really don't matter. The messages are subtle but horror movies reflect the zeitgeist of society. They are aimed at the masses so it stands to reason that they should pander to the masses by showing them what's in their minds and hearts. So next time you're watching some (half) naked character getting carved like a turkey in a horror movie ask yourself why? The answer might blow your mind. 

Good horrors to watch are THE RING, WHEN DARKNESS FALLS, ANGEL HEART, JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES 2: LOS MUERTOS, JOHN CARPENTER'S MOUTH OF MADNESS and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Horrors to avoid are THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (it borders on crap and genius so pick a side), THE ASTRONAUT'S WIFE and IT'S ALIVE 3: THE ISLAND OF THE ALIVE.
