Once an aspiring clothing designer, J. Anthony Brown was originally pursuing a fashion career when he was just $316 short of tuition money and ended up on stage at a local Atlanta comedy club some 20 years ago. Though he’s a successful comedian today, having tackled radio, television and film, the burning desire to create designs has always haunted him. It’s evident in his flair for designer suits and his vast collection of alligator shoes.

More than 25 years ago, when deejays first developed break beats and emcees began rhyming to music, the term “Hip Hop” was coined. “B-boys” or “break boys” started going to parties and doing moves that were the basis for Hip Hop dance. In 1977, one of the original and the most legendary B-boy crews to come out of the Bronx was the Rock Steady Crew. They performed all around the Bronx and quickly generated a following.

(New York) Over the past few years, music industry moguls such as Sean “P-Piddy” Combs and Jay-Z have strutted through music videos wearing remakes of football and basketball jerseys worn by famous sports icons of the past. Husband and wife team, Rodney and Knia Bonds have discovered a way to honor the legends of Hiphop with the debut of their brand new streetwear clothing line RTB Apparel and its’ inaugural product titled Rap Throwbacks. RTB Apparel has set out to prove that throwback jerseys are not just for athletes. Rodney explains, “We had to build a brand from the Rap Throwbacks line. RTB Apparel came out of that. The product basically represents fashion & Hiphop.”

For many of us inhabiting urban areas it’s seems unavoidable not to be influenced by our concrete & steel environment. And just like hip-hop, the neighbourhood and city streets have also influenced me heavily. From the way I speak to my attitude to the gear I rock.
