To prevent that,i split my HD so that the OS is on it's own partition...so if something should happen,i can simply reformat without lossing my stored data as it stays on a different partition from the OS,but on the same HD.

Yo dude... a whole harddrive can go, physically be damaged, thus all th epartitions being lost, or the MBR can be damaged, thus unless u quite computer skilled, ur work will be lost.

Best way is off your hardrive... like Dplanet.

I backup to another hardrive using nero backup (similar to norton ghost), then on DVD's's offsite, incase my stuff is stolen or burnt. All those years gone all at once is a nightmare id rather not have. hehe

The new Apple OS has got something called Time Machine that automatically backs everything up (when you're connected to an external hard drive). It's dope - you don't even need to remember to back up any more.

How did this happen?

It was a G5 Power PC.

I think I let it get too dusty inside so the coolant overheated and leaked out in Summer.

It was R6,500 to replace the processor so I just bought another hard drive and 2GB more RAM for my MacBook Pro (taking it up to 4GB).

It's been a real hassle re-installing everything - it's like moving house!

But yeah,,, the back ups saved my life.
